CHAPTER SEVEN– Soaring Down
BROKEN ME
I was awoke with a start in the loud ringing of my phone in the bedside table.
'What time is it?'
'Where's Alex?'
Slowly, I reached for the offending gadget and stared at the caller ID flashing on the screen.
Alex
Then, it stopped before it was replaced with another incoming call
Amelia– Dave’s mom.
'What's happening?' panic rose on my chest, making it hard for me to breath.
Oh God.
With all the courage and strength left in me I swiped the answer button. The background was caked with chaos, as shouts of panic risen in barely audible mashed of words.
“Hello, Amelia?” I tentatively asked
There was a momentary flicker of static before it was replaced with Amelia's cracked voice.
“Ari, Honey it’s Dave. We're in the hospital right now.” Her voice was hoarse probably from so much crying.
“What happen to him?” I put the phone on speaker and strip from Alex's t-shirt and boxers before wearing my clothes back.
“He got himself into trouble…oh m-my… h-he… he was… just came over here, Ari please he really needs y-you right… right n-now.” She said between hiccups and sobs. That doesn’t sound like Dave at all. He never get into trouble or fights. He always sweet talked his way out from trouble.
‘Oh Dave, what have you done.’ I thought while I tied the last knot on my shoe.
“O-okay, I’ll be right over in five, ple-please just… just… text me the… the address.”
The cab ride was the most excruciatingly painful fifteen minutes if my life. After paying the driver I slide out if the cab and sprint inside the hospital only stopping at the information desk.
“David Hamilton.” I gasped out
The woman in the desk look at me questioningly but as she saw my disheveled appearance and tear-tear-stained face her face soften and clicked her fingers on the computer's keyboard.
“Miss, I am sorry but he’s still in surgery.”
“But you can seat outside the surgery room, third floor, the fourth room on the right hallway.”
“Thank you.” I mumbled as she gave me a sympathetic smile before looking away from me.
I practically barged inside the elevator and pressed three on the small pad. I tapped my foot anxiously on the tin metal box while waiting for the elevator dinged opened. Finding his room was easy enough because of Alex’s hunched form standing just adjacent from the elevator doors.
“Alex, what happened?”
“I really don’t know. Some dude found him on the alley two blocks away from the office and call 911. He was battered and broke a few bones and the police is still investigating.”
“I’m glad you’re finally here. He needs you right now Maria.”
“I know.” I said tonelessly, averting my eyes from him
After a few hours a doctor garbed in a blue operating gown emerged from the operating room and approached our group.
“David Hamilton’s family?” He called out looking directly at Victor.
“Yes, how was he?” He doctor wore a somber look and stared directly at Victor's unblinking eyes.
“The operation…” the world blurred as the next few words rang inside my head
Dead
Internal hemorrhage
My Dave his dead.
Dead
Dead
Oh God. No
“No. No. No. NO! TELL ME YOU’RE LYING! OH GOD PLEASE, NO.”
“PLE-PLEASE”
I took a wavering step backward as my body shook, rocking on my feet. Then, as if played in a painstakingly slow motion my body tipped backwards and the rest was left on gravity to decide. My body crashed hard into the ground with a thud. Slowly, everything left in me retracts as I let myself got drown on the eternal abyss of despair and sadness. Everything around me was all a blur and my physical pain was non-existent as I listened to the painful sound of my shattering heart.
DAVE’S DEAD
GONE
