Chapter 1: Broken Memories

"Every story has an end. If it doesn't have an end, it is not a story".

"She is sitting with him by the riverside to watch the paper lanterns show. They are holding hands and smiling like a happy couple. The next thing I saw was, they were running like desperate beings. The rest is hazy". This is what I wrote in my diary today. Incomplete dreams like these keep coming to me every now and then. I don't know when these dreams started to surface. I have lost the track of timeline. Most of the last 2 years I have forgotten and i'm now living my life incompletely.

Thoughts like this were eating me up when I opened the window adjacent to my study table for some fresh breeze. The moon that day was pale, very pale. My unsettled mind began to cool down as cool breeze hit my face.
I kept looking at empty space until I was reminded that next morning I had to go with my parents to riverside valley, to our summer home for the rest of the remaining vacation days.

It was already midnight and we had to leave the next morning. I hadn't packed a thing. I left out a sigh and started packing.
I couldn't sleep a wink that night. I didn't know if it was excitement or nervousness. I was just thinking and thinking all night and it was soon sunrise.

Riverside valley was 200kms from our home. As it name suggested, it was a beautiful valley situated near a river. There were less buildings and most of it's area was covered with forests.
We reached there by afternoon. Our summer house was cozy but beautiful. It was a little far away from the river. I threw my luggage aside and threw myself on the sofa. I was tired.

As I was starting to doze off, mother called me from across the room and told me that we had a little house party that very evening. Hearing those words, I helped myself to sleep.

A long sleep later, it was already evening. Our summer house was beautifully decorated with coloured lights. I dressed myself up and waited for the guests to pour in. It was a family gathering. Within minutes. the whole house was filled with chatter and gossip. I was very poor in maintaining social relations and hence got tired to death.

I went out to get some fresh air, but the sweet smell of the nearby flowers and the perfectly moonlit night encouraged me to walk a little more distance. I walked as far as I could see the lights from my house. I was looking at the sky constantly. The sky was very clear that day and had housed hundreds of stars. As I walked further, I stumbled upon a random rock and got distracted from star gazing. My eyes fell on a shadowy figure sitting by the river.

I paced up my walk a little for I was curious rather than afraid. As I drew nearer, I saw that figure was of a man, a beautiful man. The moonlight was doing wonders to his face. He was glowing and the moonlight was greatly bringing out his chiselled features. Like a butterfly searching for a flower for nectar, I unconsciously walked to him nearer. Before I knew I was already standing beside him. He was sitting on the river bank, enjoying the river view lit by the moonlight. He turned to look at me. He had beautiful but sad eyes. He looked at me for a while then spoke "Are you feeling lonely too?". He then paused.

I sat down clumsily and answered" Yeah".
He let out a mild smile then said "Then let's keep each other's company. Let's just talk until the gloom on our faces fades out". We both smiled a bit and kept looking towards the river, as far as our eyes could see.

That day was the beginning of my story. The story I want not to forget.
