Dally forced Laila to leave her "cave", which is really just her bed, on her 21st birthday. She was upset at first but her boyfriend always had awesome surprises. Dally had already packed her bag cause he said "It would ruin the surprise, and plus you look cute when you try to figure out what's going on."Laila didn't really care as long as she got to hangout with dally.

After the whole fiasco with Bob, the gang had decided, together which normally doesn't happen, to move the west coast. Dally still didn't understand why they choose Oregon, maybe because it was far from Oklahoma? Laila lived in Oregon, and that's how she met dally and the rest of the gang. Laila had been squatting in an abandoned house after she ran away from home. That's how she meet dally.

He had broken into the house to see what was in there, and found Laila. He asked what she was doing in an abandoned house and she told him the truth. He, of course, understood and invited her to join the gang. There were a few gangs in the pacific northwest, but there weren't any near her. She didn't have anywhere to go and stealing would only work for so long before she would get caught. Laila accepted and went to meet the rest of the gang.

Darry had told her it was cool if she joined Laila thanked him and offered "her" house, for them to stay in. Everybody was pretty nice to Laila. Steve joked with her and soda was like a brother. The whole Curtis family was like a new family for Laila. After they move into the house she tried to sleep on the floor, like she had before, but they stopped Laila and Darry gave her a bed to sleep on. she shared a room with him.

Dally had taken Darry's truck and started to drive. He took Laila to Tillamook, A dairy town. As they drove through town, Dally stopped and bought berries. Laila smiled because he had bought her Strawberries. As they got closer to the ocean Laila remembered the one time her parents had taken her and her sister to the beach.

The day had been sunny and hot, unusual weather for the beach. The rest of Oregon was hot, but it wasn't normal for the beach to feel like that. Her younger sister, Millie, had been running around and splashing in the water. Laila was eleven at the time and Millie was six. Her parents had told Laila to watch Millie while they went to go get food. It should have taken ten minutes, fifteen tops, for them to get into town and back, but it had been half an hour and there was no sign of them.

Millie had insisted that they went to go look at an alcove. Laila didn't think that it would do any harm so she went with her and looked around. Millie had ran ahead to look at a tide pool when the tide started to come in. Laila got Millie out and they climbed on top of a rock. Well, it was more of a hill made completely of rock. Typically it they would have been able to just walk out of there before the tide came in fully, but they had climbed down a large rock to get into the alcove. The part they had climbed was already fully submerged, and the rest was to steep to climb. Laila had gotten Millie onto the rock first so she would be at the top.

The water was still rushing in and the rock wouldn't be able to keep them out of it. She looked around and spotted a cliff face. The cliff wasn't too tall. They should be able to climb it, but with the water she had to make a choice, would she send her sister or her self up first. If she sent her sister she probably wouldn't be able to reach where she had to. Laila wouldn't be able to carry Millie on her back, she was too heavy. Laila would have to go up first and then pull Millie up after her.
