"Honey, can you come down here?" Sam's mom yelled from the living room. Sam trotted down and stopped at the middle of the stairs. She lifted both her eyebrows waiting for her mom to respond. Wait. What if it was about yesterday afternoon with the punching incident? Crap. "My boss and her son are coming over tonight for dinner, so I want you to look nice. Do you think you could show me what you have?" Her mom made herself more comfortable on the couch.
"Yeah sure! Hold on," She ran upstairs, relieved that it wasn't about yesterday. She ran to her room to look for dresses. She had some, just not as pretty as she'd hoped. Rummaging through her clothes, she found something that she would be secure in. She tried it on; surprised it still fit, and headed out to see her mom. "How's this?" She asked with a pleasant look on her face.
"Perfect!" Her mom said making an "okay" sign with her fingers. Sam smiled back and marched back upstairs to change. She noticed her phone buzzing on her bed. Hoping it was from Niall, she dove on her bed retrieving it. "Hello?!" She answered with a bright smile.
"I'm really nervous! What if people find out?" Liam's voice bugged at the other end. Sam rolled her eyes and answered.
"No one's going to find out. It was just a punch. Besides, I was defending myself," she said straightening her back like she one a contest.
"How do you know that? What if we get into trouble?" Liam was frantic. He was pacing around in his room like a bomb was about to go off.
"Seriously, don't worry! If people found out we tell them the truth. It's not like we did anything bad," she answered picking at her nails.
"Alright. I'm taking your word for it though! It'll be all on you!" He shouted. Sam rolled her eyes again.
"BYEE LEEYUM!" She hung up as she got up to get ready for dinner.
**
The doorbell rang and Sam's mom was a little too jumpy at the moment. She ran to the door to open it while Sam stood up from the couch to greet them. Sam’s mom's boss was about her height with dark wavy hair. She had a gorgeous smile. Then came in her son. Zayn Malik.
What? WHAT?
"Hi Patricia. Thank you for coming. Sam, this is my boss, Patricia Malik." She politely held out her hand for a greeting. Sam responded. "And this is her son, Zayn." Zayn's face was blank. His eyes in a little bit of shock. Sam made and awkward smile and held out her hand. Zayn hesitated a bit but then shook her hand. "Okay, dinner is actually ready, I made lasagna!" Sam's mom was WAY too hyper for this. "So, let’s go eat!

Dinner was awkward as Sam thought it would be. She slowly bit down on her food, as did Zayn.
"So, Zayn, you also go to the same school as Sam, is that right?" Sam's mom questioned making it more awkward.
"Uh, yeah," he said looking up from his food with no enthusiasm.
"Do you to have any classes together?" Her mom asked.
They both shook their heads.
"Lunches?"
Nope.
"Anything?"
Nope.
"Well, anyway, have you thought up of any colleges you were thinking of attending?" Sam's mom put down her fork and intertwined her fingers with her elbows on the table.
"Uh, well, no not really. I've been thinking of just doing my own art. Like, in an apartment. I just always thought that would be cool," He squinted a little as he said that.
"That sounds fun. Sam is hoping to get a scholarship from playing basketball."
Oh god.
"She's very talented! Has the most points each game, perfect rebounder. A great, great athlete." Her mom went on. She took a glance at Sam in time to see Sam making eyes at her to stop. "Ooh. U-um is everyone done?" She asked, ending the conversation.
"I am. That was fantastic!" Patricia exclaimed. Sam's mom grabbed the plates. "Oh! Sam! Why don't you go show Zayn that painting we bought! The one in the living room, since he likes art." She was making Sam mad. She just wanted her to get to know him. She really had no intention.
"Um, alright." They both got up and headed to the living room. "This is it." It was really ugly.
"Nice," He said nodding."
It was silence for about a minute or so until Sam broke the silence.
"I'm, really, really, sorry about yesterday, if I made you feel weird in any way," she turned to him biting her lip.
"Don't worry about it. It was kinda odd a girl was standing up for me, but it was different. Thanks," he moved to sit on the couch. Sam sat next to him. She noticed he was bruised on his neck where the guy had grabbed him.
"D-do you want, like, ice or something for that," she said pointing at in.
"Naah. I iced it earlier. It's fine," he said confidentially.
"So, what happened when he recovered? The guy," She added in curiosity.
"He just looked at me and ran. I didn't even do anything." He said lifting a shoulder. Sam’s phone buzzed. Looking down at it to see Liam's name. She breathed in heavily and breathed out. "What?" Zayn asked.
"Oh, it's just Liam. He's still nervous about someone finding out about what happened yesterday. You know Liam, right?" She thought she saw him in one of Liam's classes one time.
"Yeah, he's in my English class. He's cool," He nodded his head.
"Yeah, well, he's bothering me at the moment." She placed the phone on the coffee table. Zayn's eyes followed.
"You know... No I probably shouldn't tell you."
"Tell me what?" She asked. What did he know that she couldn't?
"Well, if I told you, he'd be pissed."
"WHO?" She was starting to get anxious.
"Okay. You didn't hear it from me, but," licking his lips, he leaned in closer, "Liam likes you." Well yeah as a friend. She made an obvious expression.
"Well, yeah, as a friend."
"No, he REALLY likes you. More than a friend. More than a best friend." That's imposable. Liam tells her everything. How did she not see this? She looked down at her phone. Liam sent her another text. He probably didn't tell her because of the drama between her and Harry. Poor Liam.
"How long?" She asked as her heart sank.
"I don't know. All I saw was his folder. Like anyone else who likes someone, he had your name on it with a heart. He also, told me something about going to the movies with you? He looked psyched." Sam's face went from pink to pale. She really couldn't believe this.
"Thanks for telling me." She lifted part of her mouth for a half smile.
"You mad at him?" Zayn tilted his head.
"No. Why would I be mad? It's weird having my best friend like me, but I don't blame him for not telling me." She really couldn't. After crying a river in front of him and telling him how annoyed she was at Harry for liking her. She felt bad.
"Hey, bud, we're gonna head home." Zayn's mom came into the room with her purse. She was happy to see Sam and Zayn getting along. So was Sam's mom.
"Thank you so much for coming over, Patricia. Come anytime." That was a little too much right there.
"We will," she said awkwardly, "See you soon, Sam!" Sam smiled at Patricia, then Zayn. Zayn tilted his head up for a goodbye. Then winked. That made her feel better. Her mom closed the door.
"Few! That was interesting!"
"Yup. It was."
