Breakfast

I was flying in the air, high above the clouds. The wind whipped through my hair and my cheeks as I smiled wildly. I flapped my arms up and down like they were wings. On my back, I felt my friend stand on my body like I was a a flying surf board. He was bigger than he was when his was jumping on Mrs. Tsvet's umbrella. He was my size now. I laughed happily with him.
Dolphins joined me in the sky beside us. They swam through the air, soaring like freedom. Around us, bubbles came to life, and floated around us. I was flying in the sky with the dolphins.
"Woo-hoo!" My stick figure friend laughed. He jumped down and swung around my body like I was a gymnastic's pole. He stopped underneath me and moved like he was running on all fours. "Hang on, kid!" He shouted.
I watched as his body changed in the air beneath me. His stick body grew muscles and skin. And then gray fluffy fur tickled my nose. I laughed as I grabbed hold of his scruff to hold on as he ran. He grew a tail and ears as his nose grew out into a snout. I laughed when I realized I was riding on the back of a wolf.
We and the dolphins dove until we were flying through the air just barely above the clouds. My wolf friend's feet kicked through the white sky cotton. He howled in triumph and happiness as the world around us changed. The cloud became thicker and cold. I could hear his feet push through the thick clouds as they became snow. The bubbles that surrounded us popped into snowflakes as they flew passed us. The dolphins clicking turned into barks as they grew fur and turned into wolves as well. The blue sky and sun turned into the black screen of stars and the moon. Dark trees broke through the snow as they rose around us. I laughed and whooped as the wolves howled and barked.
I threw my arms into the air, feeling the cold breeze whip around me. I was free. I was running with the wolves.
"Hey, dummy!" A loud voice boomed across my world. I quickly covered my ears, but my wolf's ears perked up in alarm.
The wolves stopped and yelp. Mine stopped so hard I flew off and into the snow. It was cold. I sat up and wiped the cold snow off me.
"Stupid, baby." I heard the voice again.
One of the wolves started to whine as it dove its head into the snow. It pawed at its head like it was having a bad headache. The other wolves yelped and jumped around in panic. My wolf friend backed up towards me, keeping an eye on the wolf that was hurting.
"Stop it!" I cried.
"Aw, poor loser." The voice boomed again.
The wolf yelped loudly and fell limp and whining.
Stop! I wanted to shout, but my voice didn't want to work anymore. You're hurting it!
The hurting wolf's fur began to change color. It was gray at first, like my friend, but it was turning black and shadowy. It's whines turned into a low growling sound.
A strong breeze pushed at the trees around us, making them groan in pain. The stars in the sky started to disappear like they were drowning in the endless sky of tar.
The other wolves yelped and ran away, but my friend just backed closer to me, still looking at the hurting, now black, wolf.
Suddenly, the black wolf jerked its head up and looked at me, making me gasp in fear. It looked different. The fur in its face was falling off, and the front teeth began to grow into fangs. It's eyes were completely red and it's tail was a long rat tail. It was an evil Rat Face Wolf!
I cried in fear as I tried to crawl away.
"The dummy won't wake up." The voice hurt my ears again.
The Rat Face Wolf started to creep towards me but my friend wolf stepped in its way and growled at it. I crawled through the snow, tears running down my face.
"Wake up!"
The ears of both the wolves perked up in shock. Suddenly, behind the Rat Face Wolf, water broke up from the ground like a big wave. The trees bent over and the Rat Face Wolf was swallowed into the water. My friend turned around and ran at me, but he was swallowed too, and soon I was taken into the tsunami as well, still crying in fear.

My eyes whipped open and I sat up screaming and crying. I wiped my eyes and looked around. Beside my bed Rat Face Boy and his friends were laughing. My body, blanket, pillow, and bed were soaking wet. I gasped and looked around furiously, tears still crawling down my face. I looked down at Rat Face's hands and he was holding a wet bucket.
"Hey!" I cried. I got up and started punching him, but he was much bigger than I was and just pushed me down, and I hit my head on the nightstand that was between my bed and another.
"Oh, stop being such a big baby!" Rat Face said coldly. "Get up No-Name," he called me. "It's breakfast."
He and his friends highfived each other and walked away laughing.
I hugged my knees, cold and wet, as I continued to cry. I didn't like it here. The kids were mean. I sat there in the big room full of beds where all the kids slept.
After a few minutes of crying, I looked down and my feet and saw a small stick figure walk across the wooden floor. It was my friend.
I sniffled and wiped a tear away. He stopped. Between my feet and looks up at me. He waved at me and I waved back. I winced as my stomach growled and I felt myself become hungry. The stick figure waved his arms around to get my attention again. I looked down at him and he pointed at my stomach. Then he pointed to the door.
I shook my head and wiped another tear. I'm scared. I though to myself.
The figure whipped his hand out like he was swatting a fly as if saying: Ah-fooey! Then he grabbed my big toe and tugged on it while pointing at the door again.
I sighed but stood up. I walked over to the edge of my bed where a chest sat. I opened it up and looked at the clothes I had available. Not much.
I imagined walking out in a full suit. A fancy black tux, and a nice green tie that matched me eyes! Good shoes, and my brown hair combed back! I smiled and chuckle to myself as I picked up some clothes.
I left the room wearing blue jean shorts, and a green shirt with my small black leather jacket my mom made me before... the thought brought a tear to my eyes, but I wiped it away when I saw my stick figure friend leading me to the smell of food. I smiled and followed.
The cafeteria was filled with kids. The smaller ones, my age, were all sitting to the left, closer to the kitchen and the trash. The tables got filled with older kids as I looked to the left. The oldest kids were sitting next to the windows. There wasn't many, but enough to fill a table. They looked like teenagers.
I walked over to the counter beside my age table and looked over at the lady. She looked young like she belonged on the teenage table. He wore a white shirt and an apron and her long brown hair was pulled back into a bun under a hair net. She had calm and smooth skin, and pink lips. Her brown eyes looked at me and her blindingly white teeth smiled at me.
"Hey." She said. "You must be Matt."
I tried my best to look over the counter, but it was much taller than me. I grabbed hold of he edge and pulled myself up, resting my chin on the cold tile. "My names is Matthew!" I said.
She laughed and leaned forwards on her chair. "Yes, but Matt is short for Matthew. Did you know that?"
     I shook my head. "No."
She smiled and tilted her head. "Well, then there you go. Is it alright if I call you Matt?"
I took a moment to think about it. My stick figure friend looked at me from my elbow as it rested on the counter to keep me up. He shook his head yes.
"Yeah, I like it!" I laughed.
She giggled and nodded her head. "It's settled then. Nice to meet you Matt. I'm Laura." She reached her hand over.
"Hi. I'm Matt." I said, taking her hand and shaking it.
She laughed and pulled out a plate of food from somewhere under the counter. "This has been waiting for your arrival." She said.
"Sorry to keep it waiting." I said making her laugh again.
The plate had some brown rice, a hamburger patty, and eggs. "That looks good." I admit. My stick figure friend took in a whiff of the smell and passed out in love. "Did you make it?"
"Oh, I just cook everything. Mr. Ledd makes the stuff. Like, the ingredients and such. He made it last night so I could cook it this morning." She says, resting her head on her hand with her elbow on the counter.
"Ooooh..." I said, sliding the plate off the counter. I took it down and looked at it. It really did smell good.
"Hey," Laura said leaning over the counter. "Wanna hear a secret?"
     My eyes lit up. "Sure."
"Well," she whispered, urging me to move closer. "Inside the rice, there is a golden grain. If you find it it'll give you a magical surprise!"
I gasped. I could hear my stick figure friend gasp on my shoulder as well.
"Thank you!" I shouted, walking away.
     She laughed. "You're welcome Matt."
I was too busy looking at my plate , staring at the rice wondering where that golden grain could be, that I wasn't paying attention to where I was going. Apparently Mr. Ledd wasn't either. He was rubbing his eyes as he walked along the side of the long counter. He was holding a chair in his left hand and I almost walked straight into it. Luckily, he looked up fast enough.
"Whoa!" He exclaimed as he jerked the chair up and stumbled. I walked harmlessly and obliviously under the chair as he lifted it over me. Laura giggled and Mr. Ledd sighed in relief as I continued to the end of the table staring at my food where I eventually sat down and began to eat.
Mr. Ledd set the chair down in front of Laura and sat down, rubbing his eyes again. "Good morning, Mr. Ledd." She said to him.
"Good morning, Laura." He said gloomily.
Laura took out another plate of food and put it in front of Mr. Ledd. His eyes widened as he sniffed the air. "Whoa, Laura." He said. "Smells great."
"Thanks, but you made it." She said.
"Oh, don't give me all the credit. Cooking it right is just as important as the ingredients. Maybe I'll show you a few things later." He said.
"That'll be great. Thanks." She said smiling.
"You ate right, Laura?" He said taking a bite of the hamburger patty.
     "Yes, sir." She said smiling.
"Good." Mr. Ledd said. "Where-" He was cut off by an empty plate being pushed back up on the counter. Mr. Ledd looked down to see me pulling myself up.
     "Wow." Laura chuckled in awe.
"Look!" I shouted laughing. I held out my hand to Laura, sticking my thumb up. On the tip of my thumb, my stick figure had one foot up on a gold rice grain while holding a green flag in it.
"Whoa, you found it!" Laura exclaimed. "Nice job!"
Mr. Ledd sat there eating with a blank look on his face because he had no idea what was going on.
     "Where's the magic?" I asked.
"Hmm..." she thought. "Eat it real fast!" She said.
Without hesitation, I shoved my thumb in my mouth and ate the rice. I gasped and pulled out my thumb and looked at it. My stick figure friend was drenched in my spit. I giggled as he tried to whip it off.
She smiled and reached under the counter again. She looked at me with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Boom!" She said, whipping a handheld mirror out above the counter.
I looked at myself in the reflection. My short brown hair, that swept off to the right and then up, and my green eyes. I arched my eyebrows in confusion. "But that's me."
     "That's me?" Laura asked.
"Hey, no." I said. "You're you. That is me."
"You are me?" She asked again.
"I'm not you!" I said frustrated. "You are you, and I am me. And that," I said pointing to the mirror. "Is me."
Mr. Ledd chuckled beside me and Laura smiled defeated.
     "Alright." She said. "You win."
I gave her the stink eye for that one. Then I asked: "But why is the surprise me?"
     "Well, can't you tell?"
     I shook my head no.
"You are ever so much more precious now." She said. "The grain cleansed you of evil. It cleaned your soul."
     "My soul?"
"Yes. The thing that makes you you." She said, poking my nose.
"Heyyy... we had this conversation." I said glumly making her laugh again. "So... I'm good now?"
     She smiled. "Better."
     I gasped and smiled.
I hadn't noticed, but Mr. Ledd had found a gold grain as well. He was now staring at it at the tip of his fork as if he was debating whether or not the legend was true.
