03:16The silence was deafening.
Somewhere between rundown buildings that blocked out the misty amber glow cast down by the hiding moon, polished boots clicked against cracked, cobbled pavements. The world was quiet, dead. Yet, the air carried heavy tension that felt nearly tangible against bare skin.
This late at night, not a single soul dared to venture past the threshold of their humble cottages. Not with the rumours of a supposed serial killer on the move, and definitely not with the faulty streetlights that flickered every 3 minutes.
Byun Baekhyun, however, was no ordinary soul.
Slivers of shadows, accompanied by a rush of freezing air, trickled past the openings of his navy trench coat and merged with the insubstantial ones cast by shophouses on either side of the street. They would stay there, keep watch, and hopefully catch a whiff of whoever it was that had been following him for a few minutes now.
The 26-year-old quickened his pace. His own footsteps were way too loud for his liking. Baekhyun made a mental note to remind Jongdae (for the 7th time) that he had wanted soundless soles. Not posh leather shoes with heels that clacked noisily in the middle of the night. They made him look like a classy man in ballrooms, yes, but a total fool during his stealthy night missions.
Something moved from the corner of his eye.
Baekhyun blinked.
The street was still cold and deserted, the air seeming to have dropped a good 10 degrees celsius. Except that it's quiet now, too, because Baekhyun had stopped walking altogether. An unnerving pin-drop silence.
He turned, in an almost casual manner, and simply stared. The silence dragged on, and on, and-
"Huh," His amused scoff echoed down the street as he kept his eyes on the food stall just right in front of him. "Takoyakis."
The hand that had already been brushing against the concealed blade in his pocket dug further in until he pulled his phone out.
She picked up after 2 rings.
"It's half past 3 in the morning, what-"
"Good morning to you too, love. The takoyakis here are on sale, and they have them in your favourite cheese flavour. Do you want me to get some? Buy 5 get 2 free, the sign says-"
