It was an exceptionally sweltering day.
To hide from the sun, Taeyeon found herself right back in bed after breakfast, air-conditioner on full blast. She remembered lying on her side while scrolling through social media, occasionally replying work messages. The house fairy didn't know when, exactly, she had fallen asleep with her phone still lightly held between her fingers.
The next time she woke, a faint pressure was felt on her hands. Someone was taking her phone away ever so gently, as if afraid of waking her up. Groaning, Taeyeon resisted without opening her eyes, before she caught a whiff of the very familiar scent. Wordlessly, she let go of her phone where it ended up on the bedside table. The hand came back almost immediately, combing through her tangled locks while patting her head.
"... Baek?" She mumbled, eyes still closed.
"Shh," The bedsheet shifted as Taeyeon felt soft, supple lips on her forehead. "Go back to sleep, sweetheart."
Cracking her eyes open, Taeyeon caught a glimpse of Baekhyun stepping away from the bed as he removed his necktie and headed for the bathroom. It felt like an eternity as she stayed where she was, dazed and mesmerized by the sound of water droplets hitting the bathroom tiles.
By the time Baekhyun was back, clad in a black supreme hoodie and nike sweatpants, Taeyeon was fully awake. She sat up in bed as Baekhyun looked at her in surprise.
"You should be sleeping." He lightly chided.
All Taeyeon did was pout exaggeratedly as she wiggled a little to the left and patted the now empty space next to her.
She would never get sick of how Baekhyun's face lit up as his eyes crinkled in adoration, lips tilting into a wry smile. "I've gotta dry my hair first."
"Come here." Taeyeon insisted. Reaching out, she grabbed a towel from the neatly folded pile of laundry she did earlier on in the morning.
Plopping down on the bed, Baekhyun sat cross-legged with his back facing her, his wide shoulders nearly blocking her entire view of the dressing table. She had to stretch her arms out fully in order to reach the top of his head, but Taeyeon didn't mind at all. This close, she could feel his body heat and catch the scent of his favourite baby powder (there was still a faint trace of it lingering at his neck) ; it only truly felt like home when he was with her.
While toweling Baekhyun's hair dry, she made sure to massage his scalp as well. It was apparently what Baekhyun needed as he sighed in relief, shoulders slowly sagging.
"Long day at work?"
Baekhyun groaned. "The worst."
Snorting softly, Taeyeon placed the towel aside and pressed down on the hard knots in his lower back. "No way it's the worst. Remember that time you came barrelling through the front door, kicking off your shoes and whined in the hallway about your self-centred colleague? You looked like a kicked puppy, thrown in the corporate world, and I had to apologize to our neighbours-"
"Hey, hey, hey!" The 31-year-old tried to turn, only to be pushed on the back of his head by Taeyeon. "That was an exceptionally bad day."
"Sure, Jan."
"Stop saying that, baby. Who's Jan?!"
Taeyeon looked at him in disbelief. "You're such an old man."
Pouting, Baekhyun threw himself backwards and started pulling all their pillows towards him. Hilariously reminding Taeyeon of a crab, he was soon buried under a pile of pillows, save for that dark brown tuft of hair peeking out at the top.
Cautiously, Taeyeon prodded at where she assumed his elbow was.
The pillow fortress shifted slightly.
She could remove all the pillows from him, but Taeyeon considered it too much work. Besides, she knew he would soon feel stuffy enough. Thus, a minute later found Taeyeon leaning against the bed's headboard, hands clasped on her lap as she stared idly at the clock.
"Baekhyun." She called out.
A surprisingly quick response of disgruntled noise from the messy white pile next to her.
"My stomach hurts."
It took a split second before the pillows were thrown in all directions (one nearly hitting Taeyeon in the face had her reflexes not saved her in time) as a flustered-looking Baekhyun sat up so fast that she worried about his head.
"What? Since when? Why didn't you tell-"
The moment peals of laughter burst from deep within Taeyeon, Baekhyun scowled and reached out to pinch her cheeks playfully.
"I wasn't lying! I was hungry!" Taeyeon couldn't help but giggle again.
It seemed her laughter was infectious as Baekhyun couldn't help but chuckle as well. Lying down all of a sudden, Baekhyun rested the side of his head against her chest, engaging in a staring contest with her stomach bump. Taeyeon felt flames licking at her heart at Baekhyun reached out and caressed the covered raised skin with utmost care and affection.
"Your mother is bullying me." Taeyeon couldn't see his face, but she could hear the pout in his voice.
Chuckling, she started playing with his hair, smoothing out some parts that had gotten messy from the pillow fortress. "Your daddy was being dumb."
"Dumbo." Taeyeon continued softly as she pulled gently at the ends of his pointed ears.
It was unusual of Baekhyun to not rebut such remarks from her, and Taeyeon soon realized why. The guy was propping himself up on his elbows now, eyeing at her stomach with literal heart eyes as he leaned forward, ever so slowly, to place soft, lingering kisses along the swollen bump.
"Be a good girl in there, hmm? Your mother is already having a hard time at work, so don't kick her too often." And then, in a much softer tone, as if it's just meant for the baby alone. As if Baekhyun didn't want the wind carrying his precious words away. "I love you. So much."
Taeyeon had to bite down on her lower lip to stop her eyes from brimming with tears. To distract herself, she poked at his side. "What about me?"
In a swift motion, Baekhyun was leaning against her in such close proximity that Taeyeon felt the familiar heat creeping up to her cheeks. For a moment, she thought he had noticed the blush and prepared herself for the never-ending teasing. What her husband did, however, was not what she had expected.
The hand that was approaching her cheek now rest against it, thumb slowly rubbing at her cheekbone as Baekhyun closed in to meet the lone tear (that she had unknowingly let out earlier) with his lips. By the time he sat back where he was, no longer balancing on his knees, he was looking at her with such awe and fondness just like the very first day they met in the company.
"And I love you the most, sweetheart." He whispered, eyes darting around as if trying to memorize each and every of her facial feature.
At his words, Taeyeon couldn't help but hiccup and burst into tears. She truly blamed it on the damned hormones.
"Hey, hey. Don't cry. You're going to get wrinkles-"
Taeyeon nearly kicked him off the bed.
