DMEANOR— Why Do We
Zico Ft. IU — Soulmate
"so why don't we
walk under the twilight rays
and into the horizon together?"
It was nearing the brink of dawn when Kim Taeyeon stirred in the warm comfort of tangled white sheets. The twilight rays that sifted through thin, woven grey curtains landed on the wooden floorboards and moved, ever so slowly, to illuminate the person lying next to her.
Despite still feeling exhausted from the events she had attended the night before, Taeyeon couldn't bear to close her eyes for even just another minute of sleep. Her gaze roamed his features, heart thumping at the droopy ends of his eyes and pouty lips as he whimpered softly.
Taeyeon could only sigh quietly as she brushed Baekhyun's fringe from his forehead with a touch so gentle, it felt like she was afraid of disrupting the silence that enveloped them in the early dawn. She had already been asleep when he came home in the wee hours, but she vaguely remembered the drumming of water against bathroom tiles and the unmistakable citrus scent that clung onto Baekhyun as he quietly eased himself under the covers. The arm that snaked around her waist ever so lightly and the warmth from his chest that replaced the cold night, along with the kiss he had placed against her hairline.
Another whimper left Baekhyun's closed lips. He must be really tired, Taeyeon thought as she clutched at the ends of the blanket and adjusted it so that it would reach his chin at least. His arm was still wrapped snugly around her waist as he stirred and faced her direction.
He's just like a drug to Taeyeon. The addicting warmth that just seemed to radiate from his body no matter where and when, the scent of clean baby powder and citrus that clung onto him throughout the day, and the softness of his cotton plaid pajamas that made Taeyeon want to snuggle into his very being.
In fact, that's what she did.
Taking a quick peek at Baekhyun's closed eyes, the house fairy inched closer and closer, until the tip of her nose was right at the crook of his neck. The bare skin was so enticing that she literally bumped her nose right against his neck, her hair falling all over her face in messy, tangled strands. Baekhyun barely stirred (though the puppy-like whimpers did stop) and so she went on to bury her nose deeper into the space between his head and the mattress, the warmth there undeniably comforting.
Taeyeon's eyes were tightly shut when she felt the rumble of Baekhyun's silent chuckle in his chest reverberating underneath her.
"You missed me this much, huh?"
With the tips of her ears burning, Taeyeon shifted even closer to the man and wrapped her arms around his waist tightly this time, face pressed tightly against his chest. The cocoon she would never ever leave if she could.
She did stop hugging him for a moment, just to give him a light-hearted punch on the shoulder.
Everything happened too fast, and Taeyeon was caught unaware when he half sat up and flipped the both of them over. Not that she was strong enough to resist his strength anyway. That guy practically lived in the gym these days.
Baekhyun barely put any weight on her as he steadied himself on his arms that flanked either side of her head. Taeyeon thought it's illegal for someone to look this good with messy bed hair and sleepy eyes. The second button on his shirt was undone, probably from tossing in bed the night before. She had an urge to button it up.
Supple fingers gently nudged her chin, tilting her head up. His eyes roamed her face, cherry lips in such close proximity. It felt like a whole lifetime went by with him trying to memorize each and every feature of hers.
Then, he spoke. In his throaty, raspy morning voice. "Good morning to you too, love."
Taeyeon couldn't help but break into a smile. A smile so wide she felt her eyes squinting and her cheeks hurting, but she couldn't care less. In this moment, at the brink of dawn, there was him and only him.
If anything, her smile was so infectious that Baekhyun's eyes crinkled into crescents as the corners of his lips tugged upwards. The hand that held her chin moved along her skin, now resting at the curve of her cheek, thumb rubbing soothing circles just under her eye.
"God, I missed you. So," He moved in to peck at her forehead, nose, chin, neck, each kiss bringing each word. "So much."
Wordlessly, Taeyeon hummed and combed through his fluffy hair with gentle fingers. From her position, she could see the slightly-frosted window. Past the horizons, an unmistakable amber glow was peeking out. The sun was rising, and with it, brought warmth.
She only snapped out of her thoughts when a heavy weight dropped onto her so suddenly that she squealed. Baekhyun was the one shamelessly burying his face into the crook of her neck now.
"Baekhyun!"
He hummed. "5 minutes."
"Get up-"
"Wait, no. 10 minutes. Ah, nevermind. Let's just sleep in for the day."
Taeyeon was ready to argue, but something about the way he slumped against her and the warmth that very dawn brought changed her mind. Gradually, she relaxed and shifted into a much more comfortable position while tucking Baekhyun under the blanket. The latter made a disgruntled noise of protest, with his eyes closed, and draped the blanket over her form instead.
"It's cold." He grumbled.
They ended up arguing, for the next few minutes, over who should get the blanket. Taeyeon would have continued if not for Baekhyun grabbing the blanket and throwing it over the side of the bed before he took Taeyeon into his arms, with his chin on the crown of her head and leg draped carelessly over hers.
His defiant gestures made her laugh heartily, and she felt the smile on his face as well when he pressed his lips further into her hair.
Taeyeon kept her eyes trained on the windowsill, gaze idle and fingers tracing random patterns on Baekhyun's broad shoulders. The steady beat of Baekhyun's heart drew her closer and closer into dreamland once again. The breeze outside picked up, and the world was just starting to wake up.
She could really get used to this.
