Holding the car door for her, I let North get in first. She clambered into the left back seat, while I followed into the right. The floor of Hank's car was littered with various wrappers and other pieces of rubbish, but it wasn't the worst.
"How far is your house from here?" I asked, trying to start up a conversation. Outside, dark clouds could faintly be seen covering up the stars, and it started to rain not long after the clouds had come into view.
"Not far. We'll be home in about ten minutes." Hank answered, keeping his eyes on the road. Connor began playing with his coin, Hank fiddled with the radio, and North stared out the window. Loud music came blaring out of the speakers, mildly startling all of us except for Hank. Midway through the song, the audio became slightly distorted, but it soon stopped when Hank ejected the CD.
"Must be scratched.." He mumbled to himself before throwing it onto the floor of the car. Bored, I decided that looking out the window would be my best source of entertainment, as it didn't appear that anyone wanted to talk.Gentle drops of water rolled down the window, leaving trails behind them. Puddles formed on the roads and pavement, and the cars and their lights reflected in them. Thunder rumbled in the distance while lightning streaked across the sky.
"Sounds like a thunderstorm. Hopefully the roads don't get too slippery from the rain.." Hank's voice had a hint of fear in it.
"Unless it snows, we should be okay. There's a very slim chance of the car sliding or rolling in a simple thunderstorm like this." I did my best to calm him down, as it wouldn't be enjoyable for anyone if Hank, or any of us, freaked out at any moment in time. He nodded, noticeably relaxing but still being cautious and driving slowly. After a few more minutes of listening to the thunder and rain, Hank pulled up in his driveway and parked the car.
"We're home." He was the first to step out, rushing toward the front porch to avoid getting wet. Clutching the painting utensils that I collected from Jericho under one arm, I jogged up to the door, not as concerned about the weather as Hank but still not wanting to get rained on too much. North beat me there by a few seconds, and she made it very obvious that she was proud of herself by giving me a smug grin before wiping her shoes and stepping inside.
