Several seasons passed, and all was well. WaterfallClan had seven apprentices, one of which was a medicine cat apprentice, and three healthy kits. Swanstar sat at the edge of her den, watching the rest of the clan go about their business. There was Clovermark and Adderstrike sitting side by side, purring and laughing; Flamemask and his border patrol arriving back at camp, chatting about annoying GloomClan cats not sticking to their side of the border; Stormcloud and Ambertip sharing a rabbit; Iciclepaw and Blazepaw fighting, the other apprentices cheering them on.
"You should get those apprentices battle training, rather than play fighting in the middle of camp. They're kicking up a lot of dust." A grey tom with dark grey tabby stripes and amber eyes mused as he padded up to his leader.
Swanstar turned her head and blinked. "Hello Stormheart. Yes, perhaps I should. And the training clearing is shaded. The greenleaf sun is beating down quite harshly."
Stormheart licked his light grey chest. "It is quite hot. I went and dipped my paws into the Swift River, to cool them down a bit."
Swanstar smirked. "I can tell." She pointed with her white paw at his black ones. They were covered in dust.
"Oops." Stormheart blinked. "It must have stuck to my paws as I came into camp. Anyway, the Swift River's quite low this season, so we will have to keep an extra watchful eye out for intruders wanting to cross into our camp."
"Yes, of course." Swanstar nodded. "Stormheart, could you get the apprentices mentors? I know Petalpaw is in the apprentices den, so tell Clovermark she is there and not with the other apprentices."
Stormheart padded away. "Okay Swanstar. Mentors and apprentices, meet me by the Announcement-Boulder now!"
Swanstar watched her deputy out of light aqua eyes. He was the perfect deputy; much better than Fernface of StumpClan, or Blackheart, GloomClan's deputy. He was patient, kind, thoughtful, dangerous on the battlefield, and had a good sense of humor. If she had not chosen Bushheart to be her mate after Blazebelly died, she would have chosen Stormheart. Instead, another she-cat had the privilege to be Stormheart's mate - Mossmuzzle. Mossmuzzle was actually carrying kits right now. Frostleaf, the WaterfallClan medicine cat, wasn't sure how many kits there would be, but they would certainly be strong and healthy. Swanstar purred at the thought of new kits. She was hoping that one day her youngest kit, Icebolt, would find love. She wasn't interested, but that young tom Flashstreak was already attracted to her like a squirrel was attracted to acorns. Swanstar smiled.
"Swanstar?" Stormheart meowed as he approached his leader once more.
"Yes Stormheart? What is it?"
"Would you like to go on the sunhigh border patrol?" Stormheart asked.
"Okay, sure. Who else is on the patrol?"
"Orangeblossom is leading it with Stormcloud and Mossfang."
"Alright." Swanstar got up and stretched. "And is there a hunting patrol out?"
Stormheart nodded.
"Good. Now, you are in charge while I am on patrol. You know what to do." Swanstar smiled.
Stormheart smiled back. "Yes Swanstar."
★★★★★★★
The border patrol was extremely pleasant. No rogues or loners had strayed across the border. A couple of kittypets had wandered on the other side of a twoleg fence, but that was all. No GloomClan, no StumpClan, no nothing. And Orangeblossom was doing a great job leading her first patrol. Swanstar could still remember little Orangekit on her first day out of the nursery - tottering around on unsteady legs, mewling and purring and gathering a lot of "aww"s.
On the way back to camp, Swanstar went up to Orangeblossom to congratulate her.
"You have done a great job of leading your first patrol!" Swanstar purred encouragingly.
Orangeblossom blushed under her fur. "Thanks Swanstar. It's not that hard."
"But it is! I'm pretty sure I messed up my first chance at leading a border patrol." Swanstar mewed.
"Really?" Orangeblossom stared at Swanstar.
"Really. I lead them on the wrong path, and when I got on the right one, I got them to mark the wrong markers, and I walked into a tree." Swanstar mrowed with laughter.
Orangeblossom purred. "I wouldn't expect you to do that. I thought you were always a great leader."
Swanstar shook her head. "No, not always. I wish I was though. I was only chosen to be leader because of a prophecy."
"You were in a prophecy?" Orangeblossom asked.
"Yes. I am the great granddaughter of a cat from the original WaterfallClan, apparently."
Swanstar was about to tell Orangeblossom of the prophecy, but instead Icebolt, one of the three fastest cats in the clan, came speeding up to the patrol.
Swanstar frowned. "What is it Icebolt?"
Icebolt wasn't even out of breath. She quickly mewed "Everyone! Mossmuzzle is about to kit!".
