Fourteen

-Messi-

“Kay, I’ll see you soon, baby,” I kissed the top of Antonella’s head. She had an important once-in-a-lifetime photo shoot somewhere in Paris, on le Tour Eifel, and so we had to cut our trip short. But I didn’t mind. We had a blast at the Maldives’ Club Med.

Plus, I wanted to give Gabri a surprise and train a bit with the guys before we went up against Liverpool on the Sunday, so I didn’t mind it. And Antonella really loves to model, so it was just one of the little sacrifices we had to make.

“Have a safe trip to Paris. Don’t forget to get me something.” I smiled cheekily. She rolled her eyes but gave me a tight hug.

“I won’t forget. Bye, darling,” Antonella pecked me on the lips sweetly and I breathed in her vanilla fragrance as she gave me the dazzling smile that I’ve fallen in love with and slid into the yellow cab.

I waved goodbye until she was out of sight. I got on my Maserati and decided to call Gabriela first. I dialed 2 (she was on speed). After 10 rings, she still hadn’t picked it up yet, which was weird because she had a special ringtone just for me and usually put her phone on maximum volume. I frowned.

“Odd,” I muttered before I drove off to the house.

After 5 minutes, I arrived in front the place I call my home. I went in, taking off my shoes while going into the house. Seeing that no one was in the living room, I frowned. Gabriela’s sneakers were out at the front, meaning that she has to be home. Where could she be? She doesn’t usually stay in her bedroom, because it was kind of claustrophobic, and that meant less oxygen which means a more likely chance of her asthma attacks.

“Gabby,” I called out into the empty living room, “Gabby? Are you here? Is anyone home?”

Suddenly, I felt a tug on the black slacks I was wearing while in search of Gabriela. I looked down only to see baby David Lucca with a scared look on his face.

“Well hey there, David. Why are you doing over here?” I said as I picked him up. He reminded me of my own son. “What’s wrong, little buddy?”

Mamãe,” David said fearfully, “Piano.”

Mamãe?” I questioned, “You mean your mom?” I asked oddly. “Is Carolina’s here?”

“Not mama,” David shook his head, “mamãe. Gabby.”

“Gabby?” I questioned aloud. David calls her his mom? Before I could ponder further, David quickly pointed at the piano room, tugging me towards it. Frowning in confusion, I walked into it with David leading me.

Mom and Dad had the room renovated from a toddler’s playroom to a piano room decorated with paintings of Beethoven and Bach and what not as well as countless of pieces to play when they learned that Gabriela liked to play the pianoforte. When Gabriela first came, she had a pump and everything, with her inhaler by her side at all times. It was hard for her to talk. During that period, all she did was play the piano with the doors locked. But when she started talking, she stopped.

But she never played again, because she said it contained too many memories.

“Quick, Uncle Mess,” David said in his adorable baby voice, a worried look on his young face—I’d been teaching him some short español words.  I slid open the translucent doors, and then looked inside. I almost dropped the 3-year-old when I saw the frail figure sitting in front of the piano.

“Gabby?” I asked breathlessly as I looked at her lifeless body slouched against the keyboard.

-Neymar-

“Where the hell are you?” Messi’s voice forced out coldly. I wiped the sweat off my brows as I pressed the phone against my ear with my shoulder as my hands were busy twisting open my bottle.

“I’m out running suicides with the boys after training. Why?” I asked, frowning. Was it something so important that he had to call me from his getaway with Antonella?

“I just came back because Ella had a photo-shoot to rush to in Paris. And then I came home, only to see my baby sister lying unconscious on the piano.”

My heart literally stopped as I took the phone in my hand. I didn’t really pay any more attention after that. I had already lost him at the word unconscious.

“Is-is Gabri alright?” I gulped. I swear… if something had gone wrong… I will never forgive myself.

“Oh, she’s perfectly okay, if lying down in the hospital while getting her lungs checked is considered okay,” Messi said, obviously pissed. “The doctors say that her asthma had been triggered recently and it has gotten worse. Oh I wonder. Do you have something to do with this, Neymar? Because if you do, I swear, I will not hesitate to kill you and feed your intestines to the sharks.”

I wasn’t even afraid of Messi’s threat. Hell, I was afraid that Gabri’s situation has been caused by me. I was afraid that I was going to punch myself senseless if it was something severe.

“Where is she now?” I asked, a bit breathlessly.

“She’s in the emergency room in a comatose stage while I pace up and down the corridor, praying to God that my sister would be okay. Oh and by the way, your son is with Bruna. You should probably pick him up. And do thank him for telling me about Gabriela’s state. He makes a better protector than you do.”

Messi ended the call.

“It’s me, Neymar,” I knocked on Bruna’s apartment door.  “Hey, open up, Bru.”

“Don’t call me that,” I almost stumbled into the apartment because I was leaning against the door while pounding relentlessly on the wooden door. In her arms was a sleeping David Lucca. “You dare to call me that when obviously Gabriela is somewhere in the hospital, getting poked and prodded by needles everywhere.” With one arm around David, Bruna used her other hand to poke my in the chest. She looked up at me with a fierce look. “Neymar da Silva Santos, I have never ever been so mad at one person in my life.”

“What the hell did I do wrong? If it is something to do with David, I’m terribly sorry.” I began, but Bruna was beginning to annoy me with her pokes. I swatted away her hand. “Hey. Stop that.”

“You slept with her!” She accused.

I lost it. My previous concern for Gabriela was gone. I could see red as I bit down on my lips.

“That—that manipulating b*tch!” I yelled as I pounded my fist against the wall, not caring if it gave me some cuts. David woke up, startled, but Bruna immediately cooed him back to sleep, muttering sweet nothings into his ears. When he fell asleep, with my forehead pressed against the wall, my breathing hard, my fist against the wall, Bruna glared at me.

“Don’t you call her that,” She said. “You are much more of a manipulating jerk than she is. How could you have blamed her when it’s obvious that she’s in love with you, you bastard?”

I looked at her in disbelief. “Oh, is that what little Miss Princess Gabriela told you? She’s not in love with me, damn it, Bruna! She’s lying, okay? Look at her. She’s nothing more but an orphan. She probably acted all kind, lonely, poor so Messi could adopt her. She’s probably using me as a tool. She’s a slut-”

Bruna had slapped me, hard, across the face. “You don’t deserve her.” She said coldly. “I will never love a man like you.”

She slammed the door shut.
