"Finally - you're late. Take them to the top of the stairs, third panel up in the centre." came the voice of Mr Gates.
The eavesdroppers hurried to their rooms and no sooner had the doors closed, two men reached the top of the stairs.
"Was it third one up or across?" said one man.
"Up," replied the other.
Daisy and Bets, listening from their room heard a click, then some grunting noises followed by, "Wow, look at all this stuff!, Gates must get rich charging the rates he does." They heard the clicking noise again and then two sets of footsteps departing. Daisy and Bets ran into the boys' room and they discussed what they had just heard.
"It's all very mysterious, we might have a mystery on our hands," said Fatty. Just then, the clock chimed six.
"Let's go for supper first," said Larry, "I think we should have a look behind that panel tonight."
So they went downstairs to the dining room where, to their surprise, two men and a little old lady were sitting with Mr Gates.
"Come in, sit down!" Mr Gates exclaimed so the five did. Pip and Larry gave each other a knowing look, which Daisy knew meant 'these must be the two men who came to deliver something.' Just then, another woman walked in with a large casserole dish,
"This is my wife, Mary," said Mr Gates.
"Good evening dears," she said to the children, "do tuck in."
That night, when Larry, Pip and Fatty were in their room, Fatty turned to the others and said,
"This is an awfully strange mystery - if it even is one - we have suspects and a clue but we don't yet quite know what the mystery is."
