That evening, the children were all sitting around a campfire, discussing the mystery. Fatty had taken his notebook out and was writing a list of clues and suspects. He stated his theory that Mr Connell and his friends were smuggling stolen goods to the island then he divided the page into two columns and on the left hand side, underneath the heading "Suspects", he wrote, "Mr Connell and two unknown men". Then, in the next column he wrote, "Clues: The secret panel" and, "The hidden cave?" He read this out to everyone confidently but to his surprise, George rolled her eyes.
"Well, when you put it like that it's not very much to go on is it?" She said.
"I suppose you're right, " Julian agreed, "but you must agree, there is something strange going on."
"Yes, I'm sure we'll find more clues soon!" Bets added.
"I say! That notebook is jolly full!" Dick said, changing the subject.
"Yes, we've solved many mysteries," Bets said proudly.
"Ooh, please do tell us about them!" Anne said, "Then we can tell you about some of the adventures we've had."
"The first time we all solved a mystery together was the fire at Mr Hick's cottage," Pip said, "It turned out that he had burnt it down himself to gain money from insurance companies."
"Fatty here often disguises himself," Larry said, "he's awfully good at it."
"So are the others, " Fatty said modestly.
"Oh, Fatty please be an old woman!" Bets giggled. He sighed but smiled at the same time. Suddenly, Fatty's back curved and his face crumpled, then from his quivering lips came the voice of a frail old lady, "Hello dear," it spoke and Fatty parted his lips slightly to carry on speaking but was interrupted by the others dissolving into fits of giggles.
"That was incredible!" Said Dick.
"Oh, you haven't seen him make up a new language! We fooled our village policeman into thinking that we were foreign royalty!" Daisy laughed.
"Why did you do that?" Dick asked.
"We're always playing jokes on Old Clear Orf," Pip said.
"A police officer?" Anne asked with a slightly disapproving tone.
"Oh come on Anne, we know better than anyone that grown ups can't always be trusted." George said.
"In fact, they're often the ones causing the trouble that we somehow get mixed up in," Julian added.
"What kind of trouble have you been mixed up in?" Daisy asked.
"Something always seems to happen on this island," said George proudly, "once we found gold ingots in the dungeons of the castle!"
"And we found a shipwreck!" Anne said.
"Remember when we went to Smuggler's Top?" Dick asked, "there were dozens of secret passageways around the house."
"I say! You have been mixed up in a lot of adventures," Pip exclaimed.
"Now I'm sure that if we all work together we can solve this mystery," Julian said.
