RunShe ran. Down the bleachers and to the parking lot. She'd forgotten her coat where she had been seated, but she couldn't care less.
Run
She ran. The cold winter air blew in her face, making her shiver as she made her way back to Killian's house. He was right before. She never should've gone to the game.
She slowed to a jog once she was a fair distance from the school.
She was being ridiculous. There was no need to get upset. No need to be heartbroken. It wasn't like they were a couple or anything. She didn't care. At least... that's what she told herself.
"Hey... Emma, right?"
She stopped when she heard her name.
"Can I help you?" Emma sighed, rolling her eyes as she already turned to walk away.
"Well, actually I-"
"Look, I really don't want to talk right now, okay? Just leave me the hell alone," Emma glared, taking a second to glance over the guy standing in front of her. Some kid from school. She brushed past him, making sure to hit his shoulder with hers.
"Wait! I just wanted to ask if you'd maybe want to come see a movie with me some time!" he called after her.
Emma stopped in her tracks.
She felt hurt. She felt heartache. She wanted to make someone else feel it, too. She wanted to make Killian feel it, even though it wasn't his fault. She considered saying yes, just to get on his nerves. She knew it would hurt him. It would make his heart clench like hers did when that girl kissed him.
But she couldn't. Because he wasn't the one she was mad it. It was that girl who'd kissed him she was angry with.
She didn't say yes. Instead, Emma turned with a sigh.
"Look... I'm sure you're a great guy, but I'm not interested. I'm sorry," Emma said sincerely, letting out a heavy breath.
"Got feelings for some other guy, huh?" he sighed, hanging his head in defeat.
"Yeah," Emma answered briefly, walking away. "Good night."
She couldn't say yes. Even if it were just to get on Killian's nerves, she couldn't. It would feel wrong. She would feel wrong. Plus... she wasn't really one to purposefully make anyone feel pain.
And she did believe that it would hurt him if she'd said yes. She believed he cared enough for it to hurt. Emma cared for him too much to actually choose to do something that would hurt him. And that's why she hadn't said yes.
Emma arrived at the Jones household. She didn't bother knocking and having Alice come to the door. She didn't want to talk to anyone. Instead, Emma grabbed the spare key from its designated spot and silently opened the door.
The house was quiet. Emma guessed that Alice was in the kitchen, so she avoided it on her way upstairs to her room.
A few minutes passed, and all Emma had done was lie down on her bed with her eyes focused on a tiny dot on the ceiling. She took off her glasses and put them back on. Pulled out her ponytail and tied it back up. Stupid school. Stupid girl. Stupid heart.
And then she heard it. The bang of the front door opening loudly.
"Emma?!"
It was Killian. She could hear his footsteps racing up the stairs frantically. The door to her room burst open.
