1:02am, 5 hours and 58 minutes until the end of The Annual Purge.
After a long walk back, we stopped at the red gates again.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" I asked again. "I won't get mad if you don't want to."
"No," Kelsey replied sternly. "I'm going to do this."
"Alright," I told her.
I then walked back to the truck (which was surprisingly still there), grabbed a gun, as well as her cell phone, and gave her both of them.
"A pistol?" she asked with a confused tone.
"Just to be safe. I don't want you to shoot a gun too powerful for you to handle."
"Okay..."
I then grabbed some ammo from the truck, as well as some food, and started towards the end of the Pier.
"What a night this has been," I told her casually. "And it's only half over!"
"Really? It seems like it should be done by now..."
"Well, I usually stay up all night during The Purge, anyway, so it feels about normal."
"Oh...I usually sleep during The Purge. Sleep is the only thing that distracts me from everything outside..."
More silence. That seems to be happening a lot lately.
Finally, we made it to the end of the dock. However, we instantly noticed something was wrong; the giant metal box was gone!
"Son of a bitch!" I shouted in rage.
"Where did it go?" Kelsey asked.
"I don't know!" I replied.
I looked around for any signs of it. It was dark outside, so I couldn't figure out exactly where it could be.
"Wait!" Kelsey said while pointing in the distance. "Is that it?"
I looked where she was pointing and at first didn't see anything. However, I squinted and saw what seemed to be something gray off in the distance.
"It could be," I replied. "But we need to find a way over there!"
"Can't we just take a boat?"
"Kelsey, nobody's going to go that far out for us!"
"James, it's The Purge; can't we just literally take a boat?"
I actually felt stupid for not understanding what she meant. But she was right. We just had to steal a boat and head over there! The only problem was finding a boat to take...
"I saw some empty boats docked on the way down here," Kelsey told me.
"Well, I guess it's our only shot," I said with a sigh.
With that, we went back towards the entrance, keeping an eye out for a boat. Finally, we saw a speedboat docked nearby. I ran up to it and saw it appeared to be empty.
"Seems too easy," I told her. "Better make sure it's safe."
I then slowly got on and looked around. I didn't see any people, weapons, or cameras anywhere on the boat, so it looked to be alright. I signaled Kelsey to come on, which she quickly did.
"Do you know how to drive one of these?" she asked nervously.
"Of course," I replied. "My dad used to let me drive his all the time."
With that, I turned the boat on (its keys were conveniently in the ignition) and pulled away from the dock.
"Hold on tight!" I commanded.
The boat then went towards the metal box at a fast speed! Kelsey almost fell on her ass as we pulled off. Despite our speed, it was still going to be a long ride to that safe house. I just hoped Mark was in it.
