Darius dropped me on the ground outside the mouth of a cave. Wide-eyed, I gazed up at the fifteen-foot entrance to a dark tunnel.
Standing, I dusted myself off. "I could've walked."
"Humans are slow." He walked past me.
Werewolves in different forms slipped through the shadows as the sound of animals scattering came from within the cave. Xavier marched out of the tunnel. He stood tall in werewolf form.
"You hurt my son," the alpha stated. "Devastated him. You must be human to be stupid enough to trespass here after what you did."
"My father, h—he didn't approve of us. After graduation, we could try again. I was just trying to make everyone happy." I lowered my gaze. "I didn't mean to hurt Titus."
A hand landed on my head, making me flinch. "Submits to authority," chuckled Xavier. "Understands when you're outmatched." The alpha raised my chin. "Maybe there is a hidden werewolf inside such an unimpressive human."
I sucked in my lips and kept my eyes hooded.
"Look at me."
My head snapped up. "I didn't mean to hurt him, sir."
"Quiet." He grabbed my neck. "Well, I suppose Titus was right. I just needed to look closer." He brushed a claw across my forehead to move my hair out of my eyes. "There it is. You might turn into a good mate for my son after all." He released me and stood. "Darius, take him to your brother."
Hooking me under the arm, the red werewolf led me inside.
"Don't try running away, Aden." Xavier motioned to the werewolves, watching us from the shadows. "You won't even make it to the river."
Darius dragged me toward a side tunnel. Werewolves scattered when we approached.
"You're hurting me." I pried at Darius's hand.
"Then stop falling behind." He jerked me forward.
I staggered for a moment before regaining my balance. My knee was still bugging me from earlier. I glared at him and continued to walk with a slight limp. He took me to a cave that branched off from the main passage.
"Oh, Titus," called Darius.
"Go away," muttered a voice from a large mound in the center of the room.
"I brought you something."
"I told everyone to leave me alone." A hand emerged from the mound and pulled the blankets further over the lump's head.
"You'll want this one." Darius lifted me off the ground. "It's your damsel in distress." He tossed me into a pile of furs. "Have fun." With a wave, he left the room.
Titus poked his head out. "Aden?" He threw off the blankets and grabbed me by the arms. "What the hell are you doing here? They could have killed you." He hugged me tightly.
"I'll admit I didn't think it through," I breathed.
"Really?" he said, shaking his head. "Wandering into werewolf territory in the middle of the night, when does that ever sound like a great idea?"
I fell into his chest. "Alright, it was the stupidest thing I've ever done, but I needed to talk to you." I put my arms around his neck. "I'm sorry about what happened. I'm not going to let people decide my life for me. I said we were going to make this work even if my parents didn't approve, and that's what we're going to do. I'll figure it out with my dad, but we're going to make thi—"
Titus shifted, and his human lips pressed against mine.
He pulled back. "To be honest, I was probably going to break soon and come back to see if next summer was still an option."
