Glade Park, Colorado
It's been over a full 24 hours since we left the boys in Kansas and so far we haven't heard from them. There's been a lot of crying and fight among all of us. I'm sure that John and other boys will be fine, I keep telling myself that they'll be ok but honestly, with every passing minute and every passed town it gets harder to believe. I have to keep going, for the sake of everyone. I can't lose hope, not right now.
I walked out of the grocery store with white plastic bags that had the store's name in red. I opened the van door, the boys had put the seats in place so that it was like a bed. Chandler was asleep in the passenger seat with a notebook over his face.
Mark was the only one awake and was struggling to stay that way.
"Mark, it's almost 2 am, lay down on the floor in the back with Justin and Jae. I'll drive until we get to Utah." I opened the driver's side door.
"No I got it, I'm ok." Mark tried to seem more awake.
"You've been driving since we left Overland Park. Get your ass into the back." I pulled on his arm.
"Fine." He got out and laid down next to Justin behind the very back seat.
"Thank you, Markie." I closed the door and got in the driver's side.
He sighed. "Thanks, Sky."
I closed my door and started driving. I quietly sang along to the radio for about 45 minutes.
Jun sat up, she was groggy. "Sky, when did you start driving?"
"We stopped in Glade Park to get gas and some food, Mark would have wrecked the car if he would have kept driving." I explained.
"Where are we now?" Jun combed her hair back with her left hand.
"We entered Utah like 10 minutes ago." I looked back at her in the mirror. "Are you going to talk about what happened at the house? You just totally froze."
She sighed deeply. "What happened at the condo was what happened right before I lost my sister and mom. The whole house shook, the shadows came, and then they just walked out like zombies, I haven't seen them since."
"I'm so sorry."
"I'm just gonna go back to sleep." She turned away from me and laid down on the floor.
I sighed and turned the radio up a little bit. I continued to drive and sing along to the music. Before I could realize the sun started to come up over the mountains, making them look rimmed with gold. I looked at the clock on the dashboard. It was 6:12 am. I had taken the driver's seat from Mark a bit over 4 hours prior. I looked out at the empty road, no one but our group and maybe some fisherman would be out here at this time. We were in a canyon somewhere in or close to Provo. I pulled off of the road into the viewing area by a waterfall that ran down into a rushing river.
Chandler's eyes fluttered open and he smiled over at me. "Good morning."
"Let's watch the sunrise." I opened my door and knocked on the window of the side door. "Come on guys, we need something nice."
Chandler pulled himself up onto the roof. "Wow."
Justin got up and stepped out of the van. "It's cold."
"It's absolutely frigid, but we only have like an hour or so to go. Let's give the older ones some time to catch up with us." I got up onto the roof.
"I think Mark did that enough. How many times did he get us lost when we were in Colorado?" Henry stretched as he stepped out of the van.
"I heard that ass hat." Mark said from inside the van.
"We love you, Mark." I hit my hand against the window.
"Yeah yeah." Mark got out of the van with the bags from the grocery store. "Where are we going to stay?"
"I found a place last night while you were driving and the rest of you slackers were sleeping." I explained.
"Where?" Mark pulled himself on to the roof.
I grabbed the bags from him and patted his head. "Well, my fine, oddly dressed, friend. I found a place in West Valley, near a high s..."
"Get the hell off my hair!" Ren screeched from in the van.
"It's not like I meant to!" Jae yelled.
I sighed deeply. "Stop fighting! I don't have the patience for this."
"Sky do you have the gun? A knife? I'll settle for some scissors at this point." Ren seemed very angry.
"If you're going to kill your twin, the answer is no." I spoke as I handed Chandler a granola bar.
"Dammit," Ren mumbled.
"Speaking of scissors, I'll be giving everyone haircuts when we get to our new place. Now you guys come up here and eat." I demanded.
"What about Jun?" Ren pulled herself onto the roof.
"Let her sleep, she's been through enough." I sighed.
"What do you mean?" Henry questioned, his mouth was full of food.
I sighed a bit. "The house shaking brought back some bad memories for her. She struggling a bit right now so do provoke her, we don't want her to have a mental breakdown. So boys and Ren, be sympathetic. We've all been in similar situations and we've gotten through it because we support each other. It's the same with her, she needs a family. Even if she doesn't want to accept it. Understand?"
"Yeah." Everyone agreed.
