the girl tried to write a note of her own

with words sweet and rich as cream like the boy had done for her

but they seemed clumsy and unyielding

and ended up buried in a coffin of crumpled paper that she threw across her room

instead she settled for a single word

a suggestion

a request

a plea

coffee?

she tucked the note and hid it away in her bag

she tried to tuck away her thoughts of him too, but she know she could not hide them

because when she came to his locker her fingers trembled,

like lips quivering before a kiss or leaves falling in the first wind of autumn

and she couldn't stick the scrap of paper to the cold metal.

the boy watched her with forgiving eyes,

a smile at the corner of his mouth

as he caught the gasp that dropped from her lips and the note that dropped from her fingertips

an unfamiliar hand reached out and plucked the note from the air.

she watched his eyes take in the smudged ink and creased corners

the single word in the middle of the sheet

he gave a simple answer to her simple question

'yes.'
