It was my second week as CEO at Holby and I could tell that I was starting to fit in.
I walked out of the lift and down the corridor to AAU where I saw fletch, as usual, doing everyone else's job as well as his own.
'Hey Donna, is fletch ok? His shift doesn't start for another hour and he looks very stressed out.'
'Yeah he'll be fine, he's resilient. It's just that the agency haven sent their nurse for the next shift yet and they always leave exactly when their shift ends, no matter what so he's having to fill in for them.'
Oh great so he's already stressed and doing everyone's job and so he can't concentrate on managing, but how can I help him realise that they're is more to management than pleasing everyone? J then realised that I was just stood staring into space in the middle of aau and decided a better way to figure this out could be done after some managing of my own,
A few hours later I walked back through the doors of aau and, as predicted, fletch was stressed out sitting at the nurses station.
'You know that they're a more to managing than just making everyone happy' I said without thinking
'Yeah well I'm trying my best here ok?' He shot back, an angry look on his face, what had I started?
'Well you need to try harder because this isn't working, or maybe management or hands on nursing will have to give because you can't do both like this'
'Well you manage it'
'Yes. And I'm a woman' I stated
'He looks confused and then a seemed to be distracted by someone behind me, I turned around and there was a young boy walking across the ward.
'Fletch, who's that?'
'Oh it's um. He's with mrs children who's in bay 4, I'm not sure why he's wondering around though'
'Yes well sort it and sort this ok.' He looked slightly disheartened but nodded so I walked off, I would deal with this later.
