The doors opened into the foyer of Keller ward and I could already tell this was more layed back that the hectic floor of AAU. I walked through the double doors and onto the ward to see several doctors crowded around the nurses station so I decided to introduce myself.
I cleared my throat 'ahem. Hi everyone, my name is Abigail Tate and I am the new CEO. It's my first day so I thought that I would just pop over to the wards and say hello and introduce myself. So who are you?'
What was I thinking saying something stupid like that they're definitely not going to take me seriously now are they?
I could already tell that they had a disliking for me that I could only assume was to do with their fondness for my predecessor Mr Hanssen.
Eventually one of them spoke up
'Hello Miss Tate, My name is Estelle DiLucca but everyone calls me Essie. This is Dr Dominic Copeland, Dr Roxanna Macmillan, Dr Meena Chowdry, Professor John Gaskell and Nurse Ben Chiltern, but everyone calls him Lofty.'
' Thank you for that Essie and hello Dominic, Roxanna, Meena, John and Lofty. Like I said I'm the new CEO and I just wanted to say hello and if you need me I will be based majorly on darwin if I'm not in my office as I am a cradiotharasic surgeon'
They all seemed to raise their eyebrows, I know it must have seemed worse from my perspective but I still knew i still needed to earn their trust and respect, I just need to figure out how.
Now that I had given my less than impressive 'new CEO' speech to Keller and AAU, it was off to Darwin. All I knew to expect was what I had heard from Serena; 'Naylor's the boss even if she's not there, they all worship the ground she walks on so don't speak ill of her or they will hate you, especially the DON Nurse Fletcher, I've had little contact with Petrinko, but she seems nice enough, a little odd by all accounts but she has been taught well, oh and she is good friends with Oliver valentine who is on Keller recovering from.. well .. you know so if she's not on the ward, she's probably there'
So I had a rough idea of what to expect but this ward had been majorly understaffed for weeks and so they were probably going insane.
The doors of the lift opened and I looked up from the notes I was reading in my tablet. I was shocked to see two people who I could only assume were Fletcher and Petrinko standing very close to the door ready with jobs for me to do.
'Miss Tate I presume, I'm Nurse Fletcher but everyone calls me Fletch and this is Dr Frieda Petrinko'
'Yes I'm hello, just call me Abigail that's fine. Right, what do you want me for?'
I looked at Fletch
' I don't know you will have to ask Frieda she's been the leading surgeon in the absence of Miss Naylor'
'Yes we have an aortic stent that need to be put in at three and Miss Naylors regular patient Hannah Best is in bay 4.'
'Ok thank you I'll go and have a check in her in a minute'
'In a minute see I told you she would think she's much better than us' I heard Fletch mutter under his breath but I decided to ignore him and walked over to bay 4.
After checking over Hannah and ordering several tests, I headed over to the nurses station. I saw fletch looking down and he looked up at me with a sad look in his eyes.
'You do know that I'm not here to tread on any toes or replace anyone, I'm just here until miss Naylors return'
I saw the hurt look in his eyes at the mention of Jac, there was definitely a story there, I'll find out at a later date,
'Well, the sooner the better I say' he looked up at me and I raised my eyebrows 'well I'll tray and take no offence to that' I wasn't hurt, after all this time I had learnt not to take anything to seriously if I could help it, I just wanted to know what he would say.
'I'm sorry I don't mean it like that, it's just, you know, we want her back'
Yeah definitely a history, well I'll just have to do my best here until the queen arrives back and try and lift everyone's spirits without compromising my integrity as a surgeon and CEO but I don't know how... not yet.
