Notes: I rewrote this so many times, and I finally like it, so imma post it before I decide I hate it lmao
Lately every person you came into contact with was talking about one of two things. How much they liked the mysterious Phantom Thieves, or how much they disliked Akechi. Today was a day where the people around you were talking about Akechi. A frustrated sigh escaped you as you listened to the others on the subway. Your day was already bad to begin with, and now you had to quietly sit by while some business man went on about how stupid Akechi was. Luckily, you weren't alone. You lived pretty close to Akira, so you two made the trip to and from school together. It wasn't often that Akira joined you on the way back from school, but today was one of those rare days. The boy could sense you anger, and gave your shoulder a gentle squeeze.
"I know. It bothers me too." You only sighed at his words.
"Any idea where I could find him? I haven't seen him around, and I want to check on him. I'm sure people still talk about him while he's there, if not to him." After a moment, Akira nodded.
"He's been hanging around the cafe. I can't guarantee he'll be there, but I'm sure Sojiro wouldn't mind if you hung out to see if he shows up." The doors opened, and the two of you quickly made your way out of the crowd.
"You're working today, right? Sojiro wouldn't mind if I was there by myself?" A small smile crossed Akira's face as he answered.
"No, if anything he'd be happy to have someone around that he liked. He actually enjoys your company. You might even get a free coffee out of him if you ask." You laughed as the two of you began to split up.
"Not sure if I should push my luck, but I'll head over. Thanks, Akira." The boy gave you a nod before running off to whatever job he was working today. You hopped on the next line, trying your best to ignore the people around you. As soon as the doors opened you were basically sprinting out them, more than ready to be in the quiet of the cafe. At the sound of the bell, Sojiro looked up from his paper. He gave you a teasing smirk and said,
"We're not hiring, you know." You laughed, taking a seat at the counter in front of him.
"What, am I not allowed to come say hi?" You mock pouted. "You're so cruel to me, Sojiro. The least you can do is get me some coffee." The man smiled, readying a cup for you.
"Last I checked this isn't a charity. But really, what brings you here?" Another sigh escaped you as he handed you the cup.
"Honestly? I was hoping Akechi would be here. I can see he's not." The older man nodded.
"Yeah, he doesn't come in every day, but you've got about ten minutes till his usual time." You groaned, resting your head on the counter.
"Guess I shouldn't have rushed over here so fast. Is it okay if I stay?" Sojiro smiled and gave your head a gentle pat, pretending to consider your question.
"I don't know. You come in, mooch coffee from me, and now you want to stay, too? I have people fighting to get in here, you know. Always busy." You gave him an exasperate look, and he chuckled.
"Of course you can stay, just don't sleep on my counter." You offered him a grateful smile, sipping your coffee.
"So, what has you looking for him? Akechi I mean. I didn't know you were close to him."
"I mean, we're not really all the close. We do talk sometimes, but we're not close friends. And I'm looking for him because.... I'm worried about him. Almost daily I have to hear people bash him. Stupid people who don't even know him. It makes me so mad, and I just.... I can't even imagine how he feels. I haven't seen him since all the crap about him started. I just wanna make sure he's okay. Make sure these people aren't in his head. I want him to know that someone cares." Sojiro smiled, chuckling to himself.
"What?"
"Mm. Nothing, nothing. It's just amazing that no one has scooped you up yet." You cocked your head,
"What do you-" The bell on the door jangled, your head snapping to the sound. It was him. It was Akechi. He looked... bad. He had bags under his eyes, and the light that had been in them seemed to be gone. He wasn't walking the same as he use to. There use to be this air of confidence in the way he walked, with his head held high. But now... he hung his head down, hiding his eyes with his bangs. Looking at Akechi this way made your heart ache. He looked like he needed a hug. The perceptive boy seemed too busy avoiding the eyes of the other customers in the cafe to have noticed you.
"The usual, please." He said, not even really looking up at Sojiro. The man waited though, wanting to see your next move. You cleared you throat, speaking gently.
"Hey, Akechi." The boy jumped, making eye contact with you. Almost immediately, a fake smile colored his face, making your heart sink.
