I raced down the hallway, eager to see mom from returning from the marathon.
"Mom!" I called. "Mom!"
She hugged me in the doorway, but soon collapsed on the couch. I figured she was just tired from running so long.
The next day she slept until eleven. That never happened! She was groggy until she fell back asleep which was at one. I was starting to worry a little bit.
A week after she decided to go to the doctor. They diagnosed her with a rare cancer in the lungs. It was really scary especially for a 9 year old like me. I barely understood what was going on until Dad explained it to me.
I freaked out.
One month later Mom had to undergo surgery. It was traumatizing. She came home and slept all week, occasionally getting up for food or to get a drink.
I wanted to make it all better. I wanted to wave a magic wand over her chest and make the cancer go away. I couldn't though.
A couple of months later, at the end of November, Julian Gwen Ramon was dead.
I wanted to crush cancer. I wanted to kill it, like it had my mom.
I couldn't.
