Dad came home from the doctors' office that day with news for me.
He entered the house clutching the doorway for support.
I rushed to him. "Dad! Dad, are you okay?" I helped him to the couch.
"The doctor gave me news."
"What is it Dad?"
He paused before he told me anything.
"I-I have the same rare lung cancer mom had."
I felt a burning pain in my chest when he said those 10 words.
"No! Y-you can't have it! It's impossible! Dad, will you die?"
"I must undergo surgery on Thursday. I will not die. I promise."
That promise was hard to believe.
"Dad, please! Please don't die on me. You can't! You're all we have left! Please! All of our grandparents are in nursing homes and our aunts and uncles have too many kids already! I'd have to go to foster care!"
"You must trust me Tiffany. I would never leave you and Aaron alone in this world. Just believe me!"
I couldn't believe him. It was too much of a risk to let him go to the hospital and die before I get a chance to say goodbye to the last real father I will ever have.
