"I'm so sorry, sweetie."
I heard the gentle voice of my mum, about to cry. She looked at me tearfully, smiled and took my hands. "It's going to be alright. I'm going to get you someday when I can. I'm going to come and get you as soon as possible."
I gave her a quick hug. "But I want to stay with you.." I whispered.
She pushed me away gently, kneeling down on her knees. "You know I don't want to do this," she whispered back. I leaned my head on her shoulder, and she hugged me again, and I couldn't hold it anymore. Tears were flowing down my cheek. I didn't want to say goodbye.
I got up and entered my foster parents' car. I was adopted by them. That is, until my mum takes me back.
She covered half her face with her hands, hiding her tears. None of us said goodbye to each other. We knew it would be painful.
"I'll see you someday," I said instead. "Don't forget to take me home."
"I won't," she said, smiling through her tears.
Then my car window was rolled up, the car tyres started turning, and I was on my way to my new home.
And when I looked behind, my mum wasn't there.
I felt as if I was separated from her already.
