We finally arrived at her apartment after what seemed like hours. We stepped out of the car and walked into her small, but a comfy apartment. I noticed that the apartment number was 27 and that we were on the second floor. Ms. Maria wasted no time to teach me everything she knew about cooking. She taught me how to make many simple Mexican foods. It included tacos, tamales, and much more. A few hours passed and soon we had a table full of food that I had helped her prepare. We sat down across from one another and were met with awkward silence.
"So hija, did you attend to any kind of school after you ran away from home?" she asked.
"No, like I said I am a low life and I didn't think a school was the most important thing for me. But I do have to say that I am smart even when I do not seem to be."
"Well first thing is first if you want to live under this roof, you must attend school. Understood?"
"Yes, Ms. Maria."
"Call me Abuela, okay?"
"What does that mean?" I asked with a dumbfounded look.
"It means Grandmother in Spanish. You will start school tomorrow. You can go to your room and after we will go to buy you school supplies and new clothes."
I ate my food quickly and went to go check out my room. It was beautiful as if she knew I was coming to live in her apartment. It was just the way I would've wanted it.
I laid in my bed thinking how lucky I was to finally have a stable home. I walked out of the room and crept behind Ms.Maria. I spun her around and hugged her tightly. I let out a sob.
"Thank you so much. I- I- I don't know how I am going to repay this but I will. You do not know how much this means to me. This is hands down the best thing that has happened to me. I will make sure to do my absolute best in school and help around the house and do whatever you need. I am seriously forever in your debt."
I fell to my knees and hugged her thighs. I started to sob uncontrollably. She began to stroke my hair. This was all new to me and I had no idea how to cope with it all. I finally felt something I had never had the chance to experience- love. Ms.Maria lifted my tear-stained face. I looked into her eyes and saw that all they held were sympathy and affection. She smiled down at me and helped me stand up. She hugged me tightly and let me tell you- this little woman was stranger then she looked. I hugged her back and we started to walk out of the apartment. We walked towards the Impala. I felt as if we were being followed and when I turned around, there was no one there. I shrugged it off and entered the car. Ms.Maria gave me many piles of clothes to buy along with shoes and jewelry. They were all in style and looked great overall. Once we finished, we went to go eat and I got the feeling that we were being watched again. I scanned the area and saw a man in a black suit. We held eye contact for a few seconds and then he disappeared. His eyes were a beautiful grey. I got lost in my own thoughts that I didn't hear Ms. Maria calling my name.
" Elita"
I turned to her and stared at her for a minute without saying anything.
"I never told you."
"You never told me what hija?"
"I never told you my name how do you know it."
" I asked the officer local...""Oh okay sorry its just something weird is going on and I don't know how to describe it."
"Its okay, we all have our weird days."
We drove home in silence. Once we arrived, I went straight to my room and started to think of the mysterious man and why I saw him in color.
