ABTS 2: Chances

Who Was It?

Alex's POV

I carefully grab the cup of tea that Vik hands me and I relax into the sofa. All of the seven boys are sitting in the living room, Tobi and Vik on either side of me.

"So let's list out who the suspects could be," Josh says.

After a few long moments of silence, Vik speaks up, "I literally can't think of anyone."

"Yeah, but whoever did it, whoever accused her of it, knows something that we don't," Simon explains as he stands up and starts pacing back and forth.

"That is true, who would report an innocent teenager just for the sake of it," Tobi adds.

"Ok, but this person had to have known about the murder, and if I recall, Hannah's mother did not want the situation public at all," starts Ethan. "So we just need to list everyone that knew about it."

I wince every time someone mentions the situation.

"Wow Ethan, you finally said something smart for once," JJ says sarcastically.

"Yeah thanks, lad," Ethan replies proudly.

"Okay anyway, Alex, who knows about the situation?" Josh changes the subject, wanting to solve this as soon as possible. Such a dad.

I stare down at the mug in my hand and I try to think back to everyone that knows.

"Uhm, all of you, Debbie, Zach, the police, and that's all I think."

We all stare at each other in silence and process it. There's not many suspects, which makes this easier but also more frightening.

"Well, it obviously can't be Debbie because she's the one that bailed Alex out," Harry states.

"And it can't be Zach because he was there for me when I had to deal with this, plus he has no idea I am even in the UK right now," I add. I become uneasy talking about the past with Zach, it's something I have been trying to block out of my memory for the last few weeks.

Tobi notices my awkwardness and holds my hand and squeezes it out of comfort. 

"And it can't be any of us either," Simon says but stops as soon as he said it.

"No, Simon," Josh starts, knowing exactly what he's thinking, "why would any of us do that?"

Simon glares at Josh with an angry look, "I don't know, Josh, why would they?" 

"Yeah, Josh, why'd you deny that so fast," Ethan interjects.

"Are you trying to say that I accused Alex of murdering her best friend."

I grimace and sip my tea. 

"Actually, I think Harry did it," Vik says and points his finger at Harry who's been sitting quietly in the corner.

Harry becomes defensive, "What!? Why me?" 

"Because how would the police know that Alex was at your flat and not at her own home," Vik replies. 

Tobi gasps dramatically, "He has a point."

"That could have been any of you fuckers, you all knew she was gonna be at my place." 

Things start to heat up as all of the guys start accusing each other of something I know damn well they would never do. 

I stand up quickly, almost spilling my tea, "Everyone shut up!"

They all shut their mouths and stare at me, shocked at my outburst.

"You guys are all thinking irrationally," I look at all of them, "You have to think deeper. If there's one thing I learned in high school, it's that rumors spread like wildfire. So, I want all of you to think hard about anyone that you may have told about.. her."

I struggle to think of a way to say it without completely breaking down.

I watch as they all think. I would expect it wouldn't be that hard to think of a person that they told, but they all seem to be struggling. We sit in silence for what feels like hours but was actually maybe five minutes.

Then, JJ says, "Shit."

We all glare at JJ as he realizes what he did.

"Of course," says Josh. "Who did you tell."

"I am so sorry," JJ says with a really nervous laugh. 

Simon insists, "Who?"

JJ takes a deep breath and looks at me.

"Rebecca."
