Oh God, he thought, if she kept leaning against him and talking like that he may say to hell with doctor's orders. Instead, he whispered in her ear, "Do you know how much I've missed you?"

He could see her cheeks blush and she stepped away and walked over to Abbie who was back in Becka's arms. He followed, but Leo stopped him and asked what was going on.

"I finally convinced her we belong together."

"Does this mean you won't be spending every night in the lab?"

"No, not every, but I still like my work. Did you meet her?"

When he shook his head, Peter took him over to Megan. They found a topic they had in common, him. Soon after Peter realized he needed to round up the twins for bed. Kristi and Dan had left, and the others were getting ready.

On his way out, Alex just smiled at Peter, because he knew how much he had wanted this. "You're already on my schedule for September."

Peter said to John, "I'll help clean up once they're in bed."

Megan said, "I can put them to bed while you help."

So he watched as they went upstairs with Sophie talking non-stop. John said, "Okay lover boy, let's clean up this yard."

It shouldn't have taken long, but Peter was distracted. He could hear their voices floating down in the night air and before they were done, John said, "Oh just go up. You're no help to me."

He ran up the stairs and he found Megan kissing them goodnight. When she left their room, he was thinking how amazing it was that she was there. She sat down to feed the baby again and he sat next to her.

"I don't think I should stay. It will be too hard."

"I know." He felt disappointed. "Don't leave yet." He turned her head and leaned in and kissed her. He attempted to keep the kiss gentle when he longed to devour her.

When Abbie finished, he took her again, burped her and put her in her carrier to sit. With the baby safe, he took Megan in his arms. He held her for a long time. Just feeling her body next to his, felt like an elixir. The pain and loneliness of the past seemed to melt away.

"Can we come and spend time with you tomorrow?" She smiled and agreed. "I'll take them to see my mother first. What can I say to her?"

"Does she know about Abbie?"

"I don't know. I never told her, but I want to tell her that we are..."

"Together." She suggested with a smile.

"Yes, that's a good word for us, together."

She yawned, and Peter walked her downstairs, carrying the baby. Kissing her goodbye, he didn't want her to go, but she had to. He slept better than he had in a long time, dreaming of Meg.

The next day was Mother's Day. He and the twins went to church with his mother, then they took her out for coffee and muffins.

"Has Becka mentioned Megan to you recently?"

"No, the only thing your sister talks about is her new man."

"John. Well, I guess I should tell you that Nick and Sophie have a new sister."

"Really. Is she married?"

"No, the relationship didn't last. Abigail, Abbie was born last month. She is so sweet. Ma, I love her like she's mine. That's not all. Megan and I are getting back together."

"Together? Married?"

"I hope so, but we haven't discussed it yet. I want you to be happy and accept Megan and Abbie."

"I only want you to be happy. I know that you have always loved Megan. Being with her will make you happy. If you love her baby then I will too."

They surprised Megan with flowers and cards. They spent the day together like a real family. He went to Megan's more evenings after work than not. Some nights he had to work and would go home late missing her.

Leading up to the weekend, Peter asked, "Do you want the twins to stay here with you?"

"Really?"

"Yes, because if they stay with me, I will have to leave you to take them home to bed. I'd rather stay with you longer."

"So no more weekends?"

His response was to kiss her.

The following Tuesday, Peter left work to get the twins off the bus while Megan took Abbie for her routine checkup. He was playing a game with them when there was a knock on the door.

Shocked at who was on the other side, he stepped out onto the porch shutting the door behind him. The last thing he needed was for him to see the infant swing standing prominently in the room.

"Hey man, why are you here?" he asked Peter.

"I'm just watching my kids. She's not here." Peter tried to stay cool.

"Your kids... You and..."

He nodded. "Aren't you supposed to be in the Bahamas with that girl?"

"Yeah, but I came back to the states for a visit and I stopped by for some fun."

Taking every ounce of patience, he could muster, Peter said, "I'll let her know that you came by. I assume she has your number. So you two have been keeping up all winter."

"Nah, I thought I'd take a chance for old time's sake. Just let her know if she's up for a good time to call me."

Peter watched as he got in a rental and drove away. Good thing Megan and the baby weren't here. His second thought was could he forget to tell her? No, she needed to know in case he came back.

He was restless waiting for her. She arrived with smiles and good news about Abbie's weight. He pulled her into the kitchen and told her about her visitor.

"Are you kidding me?"

Shaking his head, he said, "He's waiting to hear from you."

"I don't want to talk to him!"

"Then tell him that. We both know what he's looking for." Peter felt angry, but at who? "Listen, I left some things at the lab that need my attention. I have to go back for a while." He kissed her cheek.

"You know I didn't ask him to come."

"I know." He kissed three kids on the way out.

In the car, he asked, do I know? Yes, she was with him. She loves ─ but then he remembered, she never told him she loved him. Truthfully after that first confession, he hadn't said it. He was thirty and playing games. He kept hoping she would say it. Had he not learned from his mistakes of the past? He just left her again.

He had a project that was blowing up and needed him to be there. So he worked late that evening and the next. He spoke to her, and she told him she had texted Evan that she was in a relationship.

He worked late on Wednesday night too. Thursday, he finished around seven. He was too tired to do anything, but go home. He had told Meg that he would definitely be over on Friday.

At seven-thirty, he heard a knock. He yelled at the door. "John, just come in."

"I'm not John."

"No, you're much prettier and a sight for sore eyes."
