They clung to each other by the door. Reluctantly she left. Peter went back to his bed. It would be his last night alone, and he could smell her on his pillow.
Never had a work day drag like that Friday. The only time that passed too quickly was when he drove into Portland during his lunch hour. Years ago, he promised Megan when he had money he would buy her a ring better than the tiny chip of a diamond he had given her. He didn't hesitate and picked out a beautiful ring with diamonds around the band and a flawless diamond in the center. Just one of the little diamonds was about the size of her original ring. The ring was perfect for their new forever.
The only thing that helped him through the day was the long Memorial Day weekend. He hadn't looked forward to this holiday weekend for years. The memory of their first kiss had always been too painful for him. Now he wanted to create a new memory with the ring he tucked into his laptop case.
Before he left for work that morning he packed some clothes. At the end of the day he went home, his real home with his family. He walked into the house without knocking for the first time in years. Twin hugs met him, but Nick was upset.
"Mommy didn't say we were going. She's making 'paghetti."
"No, we're staying here with Mommy this weekend bud." Peter assured his son.
Megan called from the kitchen. "Will you check on Abbie?"
He found the baby awake in the bassinet, but not crying. Picking her up, she needed a diaper change and took care of it. Megan came looking for them and they kissed in the middle of the diaper change. Peter whispered, "I think I need to finish this."
She laughed. "I just came in to tell you dinner's ready."
Late May could be beautiful and summer like, wet and dreary, or even cooler like early spring. It was a warm weekend which meant an influx of tourists and traffic. It had taken him longer to drive home from work than it did when he came the previous Friday. After dinner, they took a walk to the beach.
While the twins ran around at the water's edge, their parents sat and watched.
"I've had parents on my mind," Pete said, "Your mother has been texting me and my father still wants to meet with me."
"I want my mother to apologize to me, because she was wrong, not because I finally did what she wanted."
"I wished your mother's motives worked a long time ago, but still I enabled and used her. I'm not proud of that." Peter confided.
"I wish I could keep her from knowing about us."
"You and I both know The Point is too small for that." Peter squeezed her hand.
"What about your parental problem?"
"If I meet with him would you come with me? I don't want to go alone." He surprised himself at how emotional he felt. He thought of logistics. If they made him travel north, Megan could leave Abbie for a few hours. He couldn't imagine meeting with him for very long. "I know you would only have a couple of hours, but I need you."
"If you need me, but I'm not sure I can be polite. We can find someone to babysit."
He smiled at her. How did he ever live without her? They sat until Abbie made her discontentment known. Pushing the stroller toward home, Peter couldn't be happier.
They spent their first night together in over six years. He wasn't used to having a baby crying at three am and again at six. They fell asleep after the six am feeding with Abbie on Peter's chest and Megan curled beside him.
He woke to a whisper in his ear. "Daddy. Daddy. You slept over."
"Shh Soph, don't wake Mommy."
He got up with Abbie still asleep and with Megan either asleep or pretending, but either way he wanted to let her rest. He had kept her awake late the night before. Not that she complained, because neither of them could get enough of each other.
