The night was going so well, Jae had almost forgotten about Sujung even being there. She felt so relaxed amongst the group of friends, and she had no idea where Choon-hee was, which was honestly another plus. A guy named Jungkook had joined the group, along with a girl, Mi Soo, that was practically connected to him at the hip. They never took their hands off each other. They weren't necessarily overboard, they were just always touching, whether it be holding hands, brushing shoulders or legs, or just letting the other rest their head on their shoulder. She watched them swap loving glances at one another throughout the conversation. Taehyung teased the two of them until he re-calibrated and aimed at Hana and Jin. Jae laughed, actually laughed at everything around her.
"Hey, Jae, why didn't you ask Sujung to join us?" It was an innocent enough question for Hana to ask, but it made Jae's insides knot together. "I didn't even realize he was allowed to come on this trip, isn't he from another department? Are you guys fighting?"
"We broke up about a month ago." Jae said quickly, hoping to leave the conversation at that.
"A month ago!" No such luck. "Isn't he still living at your parents' house? God, that must be awkward."
"Ugh, your ex lives with you, that must be awful!" Jin proclaimed and then patted Jae once on the back. The conversation headed back toward Taehyung's playful teasing and talking about a ridiculous rumor about the department head having a secret child with another woman.
The talk was casual, but Jimin noticed Jae's change in body language the moment Sujung was brought up. Her shoulders had stiffened, and he watched as her hands fell to her sides and curled in on themselves into little fists. She didn't seem able to relax even a little after that. Jimin had a hard time believing that this was all merely over a break-up.
It got darker and darker and Jungkook silently grabbed Mi Soo's hand, nodded at the group and pulled her toward her tent. A few minutes later Jin grabbed Hana's hand and helped her up, offering to walk her to her tent, she was all smiles and off in seconds, never even taking a second glance at the friend she left behind.
Everything became awkward right after their departure. Jae looked as though she had to choose between death by bullet or death by poison. Taehyung was no help, he had become silent and Jimin was almost positive that the dude had fallen asleep mid-sentence.
"Well, I'd better get going." Jae spoke nervously as she stood to her feet and brushed off the back of her pants. "Thanks for the food. And for letting me sit with you and your friends." Jimin just continued to look at her face, hoping to find some clue about what this was all about. She awkwardly shifted her weight from leg to leg while looking up at him. "Thanks for sitting with me on the bus." Jimin didn't answer, but instead reached for his jacket lying across his chair.
"Come on, student, I'll walk you to your tent." He didn't take the time to look at her again, he could hear her falling into step behind him as he took off in the direction of her tent.
------
Jimin had delivered Jae to her tent without a hitch, he didn't wait for her to thank him, he turned on his heel and left. Why am I even getting myself involved? It was a break-up, perhaps it was just extremely uncomfortable for her because they lived together. Whatever it was, it wasn't his business. He purposed to himself that for the rest of the trip he wouldn't get himself involved anymore. He would even go so far as to ignore her if he had to.
"Yah." Jimin almost jumped out of his skin as Sujung stepped out between some tents and stood before him. "What the fuck do you think you're doing?"
