Chapter 13Picture of the missing girl
"You are an intern you cannot just go on the hunt you are hear to do as Taila says or you are fired," Kalmin says without holding back.
"I strongly believe I have a right to do any sort of investigating I do," Emma retialiates
"Not for while you are on the clock," he retorts back at her his brows getting sweatier by the minute.
"Well, right now is my lunch break anyways so there, may I borrow your car to go get some lunch," she lies through her teeth intending to pay a visit to Sam Jones and hiding the fact she has a packed lunch in her huge purse.
"Sure bring me back something," he adds.
"I have not gotten paid yet so good luck with that," Emma retorts snatching the keys out of his sweaty palms.
Emma gets in the driver's seat and types the address she found online. The smell of the car is fried food and disappointment. Rain begins to caress the car like a gentle child and she has actually never driven through the rain except her second time practicing with Milly so she tightens her knuckles around the wheel but smirks as she reaches the open road and even turns the lights on. Feeling like a boss until the rain stops and she has to turn into a shady neighborhood that has ghetto and crack houses written all over it. She stops at on old yellow brick house with ivy going up the sides with the numbers being 666 because that does not make you seem creepy as it is. Slowly she gets up to the door and knocks as hard as possible. A girl with ripped jeans and and a pink oriental shirt opens the door.
"What we do not have any crack here okay?," she says with a snarky attitude.
"I am actually looking for Sam Jones," Emma says boldly.
"SAMMY," she screams up the stairwell.
"Is it the realator I will pay the rent-" he stops at the bottom as soon he sees me.
"I have to get to work bye Sam-" the girl leaves on a bike that was sitting on the side of the house.
"Hello officer, come on in may help you don't mind my sister she can be rude when she wants to be,"I say with a smirk.
"Actually I have few questions about this little girl?" Emma says knowing she should not be alone with him in a house she stays on the porch.
"That is my best friend's little sister he treated her like crap but everyone loved she was sweet. She is twelve and would hang with us seventeen year olds because she was too mature for her age, after he died we were her only family then one night she never met us" he says with a smile on his face.
"She is missing and I was wondering if you have any idea who would have taken her, or any leads or people she may have not gotten along with and why," Emma asks desperately noticing that he is really distraught about this.
"I wish I did I can give you addresses about the names of some other group he went to that she was afraid of, she told me one threatened her," he says jotting down the names and addresses of three people on a nearby notepad and he also writes down his number. Oddly his smile seems vaguely familar but does not match his red hair.
"Thank you so much for your cooperation Sam, I will use the number if I find her, could you tell I was that young," Emma asks nostagically with a smile and then walking away.
"Yes you are too good looking to be above twenty, which tells me you are not here on chief orders," he smirks. With that she leaves and checks her watch realizing she still has forty five minutes until she has to get back she drives all the way to the first address where a Tilly Armstrong lives. It was just around the block thankfully. The house has been spray painted black with red splatters all over it. She knocks on the door and a girl with bright red hair opens the door.
"Are you Tilly Armstrong?" Emma asks.
"No I am Clairese, but if this is about the party last night I told we should not do it," she says and Emma looks at the list that was another name on her list.
"Who is that?" a young man stumbles down the stairs asking.
"The fuzz asking for Tilly where is she," Clairese asks demandingly.
"Hungover on the couch can we take a message," he asks.
"What is your name?" Emma asks wondering if he is the third person on the list.
"Richard Cummings but everyone calls me Rick," he says flipping his blonde hair back. Emma notices the name Rick C in caps.
"May I speak with you?" Emma asks.
"I guess but make it quick I have a pet to attend to," Rick says without any hesitation and Emma follows themm into to the dim lit house.
"We cannot pay the electric bill," Clairese states and picks up Tilly gently taking her upstairs.
"Do you know this girl and were you at the zoo on July seventeenth," Emma asks.
"Yes and yes but only because I was working there I did not even see her," he says palms getting sweaty. Suddenly a scratching comes on the basement door.
"That is my pet I was telling you about," he reports.
"Did you know her brother died not too long ago?" Emma says deciding the best way to break him is get to the heart.
"Yeah, suicide is what we all heard it was all over the news he never came home that night and his little brat went to that good for nothing Jones, he does not even no how to take care of a child only an irresponsible one would allow them to go the zoo by their self," Rick states.
"Well after what you just called her I cans see why she did not come here, did you all feel this way," she asks both of them.
"She was cute and innocent and a ball of sunshine as you can tell not our type and when we tried to change that she rebelled so she never came back but she knew-"Clairese almost says something but Rick steps on her foot.
"Knew what?" Emma asks angrily.
"The truth of about her brothers death I am sorry Rick I cannot defend you any more what happened that night was awful you should not have put a night to his throat just because of a stupid bet you lost and a car that was never yours to begin with," Claire says making her way to the basement.
"If you open that door you are never allowed back," Rick says with a smirk. She opens it and out falls the missing girl tied up and bruised. Rick tries to run but she grabs him and cuffs him and takes him back to the station.
