The Siege - The Drum

Slamming down three thick files on Carson Silvers desk simultaneously, I'm forced to look at my bother and Seth, their eyes bright with seething anger. No doubt, Seth's anger is aimed at his father, secrets aren't just untold stories in this business, they're lies and liars usually meet an unappealing ends. However, Alec is angry at something else, his eyes unfocused, staring at the file with loathing.

"What?"

"Look. Just-" Alec takes a shallow breath, lifting his eyes to mine and offering very little reassurance, "just don't lose your shit."

Glancing back at the files it's not difficult to make out our names: Seth Silver, Alec Rose, AR.

AR?

Obviously it's my file, the frayed edges making it seem older than the other two. Yet mine has no name, just initials. Almost as if Kian had been successful my residence here wouldn't be hard to erase.

AR was of no significance to any wondering eyes, Athena Rose would draw attention.

Clever boy, Mr. Silvers.

To the surprise of both men, I reach for Seth's first, scanning the first page without seeing anything of substance.

"Flick to the back. Last page."

Doing as he says, I move to the penultimate page, finally letting my eyes rest on the cause of their disruption.

2/05 - February 5th
Seth has been progressing at an unprecedented pace, aided by a Mr. Alec Rose. The two - along with a Miss. Athena Rose - have become increasingly cooperative. Due to Seth's most recent psych evaluation, it is in my belief that he would benefit from having a cohort in order to channel his emotions in a more controlled and accurate way. Originally I had considered both the Rose twins, however, Athena has proved to be both dangerous and unpredictable, I believe that pairing would cause chaos to ensue. Given a possible, underlying attraction the two could end up romantically involved, forcing the arrangement to become prematurely unsettled. Alec Rose seems to be less temperamental. The underlying issue is caused by his loyalties lying solely with Athena.

Athena will be dealt with. Kian Lawson is a candidate along with a Miss. Kara Asher.

"Athena?" Tearing my eyes away from the page, I'm surprised to find myself calmer than I expected, my breathing still even, unaffected by any residual anger.
Confirmation of a suspicion, that's all this is.

Alec is now stood behind me, reading over my shoulder and methodically checking my expressions.

"He wants me out of the way, why? So you two can play house together? I mean it's fucking ridiculous logic but I'm not surprised so please stop looking at me like I'm a goddamn bomb, Alec."

Seth scoffs almost silently as Alec raises his hands in surrender, handing me his file before taking a seat next to Seth who's looks to be waiting patiently, one foot on his knee as he leans back. However, by the way his eyes are following mine, studiously watching as I read it's not hard to tell he's tense.

Alec's file is almost the same as Seth's, the same plan scattered messily over dozens of pages. Some of our mugshots from when we started out, Alec's number plate, our bank details. Still, nothing new or alarming.
