The day after mine and Kara's shared visit to Aphrodisiac, Mr. Silvers calls us back in for training, taking centre stage as we circle around him like hungry vultures.
Thirsty for a fight.
Up until this point, training had been unbearably regimented, yet today felt different, a sense of anticipation settling over the early morning sunrise.
Clearing his throat, Silvers takes a step forward, casting a quick look over his shoulder and shooting a sadistic smile in my direction. I wonder what made me worthy of his undivided attention this fine morning?
"Here's the game, two circuits around the yard, quickest two back don't have to fight, slowest two fight until someone's unconscious, no conceding. It's quite simple. You got it?"
Rolling my neck, I can't help but sigh, refusing to look at the torture which awaits. I've always been a stronger sprinter, and long-distance was just so... un-exhilarating. The yard is just a mile of uneven grass, faint lines signal where a track may once have been.
A slow round of nods assures him of our complacent understanding as we begin to move towards the track, various cliques and groups separating themselves. Suddenly, Seth appears to my right without warning, his large arm thrown over my shoulder as he guides me further towards the start line.
"How'd it go yesterday?" Releasing my shoulder, he bends down to tie his shoelaces whilst evaluating everyone's stances, automatically gauging his competition.
"It's promising and I guess I'm temporarily re-employed."
"Wait," grabbing my arm gently, he positions me to face him, a frown etched onto his face as he studies me, "I don't understand. Who's the job?"
"Harper Montgomery."
At the name, I swear it's like his eyes set alight, the lust for some sick entertainment just too overwhelming.
"Can I help?"
Shrugging, I nod, before grabbing my ankle and pulling it to my thigh in a lame attempt to stretch.
"Are you asking for my permission, Sunshine?"
"Don't get used to it, Princess."
Turning, he shoots me a holier-than-thou smile just as Alec makes his appearance, repeating Seth's earlier move and studying the groups around us.
"Everybody ready?" Silvers raises a hand, grabbing our attention before letting it drop to his side as we set off, some still unaware the race has begun. The first lap is easier than expected, as I manage to average fifth, watching as Alec and Seth compete for first, Noah in third around six foot behind them. As we begin the second lap, I pick up speed, deciding that if I begin the sprint now I can come in third with ease. Missing out on the fight segment wasn't as appealing as Carson Silver believed.
Just as I pass the stranger in front, Alec stumbles, slowing down considerably before coming to a complete stop. Seth looks back briefly but continues running, along with Noah. I don't blame them, I wouldn't stop for anyone but family either.
