Zoe's POV
Wasn't senior year supposed to be fun? Well for me it was probably the opposite of fun, college applications were due in about a month, I didn't have time to do anything except school and soccer practice and Zion and I rarely talked. He tried to call but either I was asleep or too busy or he was. That's why when I was about to fall asleep in math and felt my phone buzz in my back pocket I asked for a bathroom break.
"Hey," I heard the smile behind his voice.
"Hi," I was happy to hear his voice.
"I wasn't expecting you to answer."
"Math was boring so I gave myself a break," I heard his small chuckle through the phone.
"I've missed you," I was fucking blushing when he said that.
"I bet you have," I joked back. I expected him to joke back.
"No I'm serious." His tone changed a little.
"So am I," I didn't know how to tell him I missed him too.
"Zoe can you please just be serious for a second," his tone deepened and I felt my hands clam up a little against the metal of my phone. I didn't know what to say next.
"Hello?" He asked after the dead silence from my end.
"Uh Yeah I'm still here," he sighed in exasperation.
"We haven't talked in a week and you can't even have a normal conversation." My body was getting hotter and I had to clench my jaw.
"What do you want me to say Zion?" I really wanted to tell him I missed him and wanted him to come back but I couldn't bring myself to.
"God, I don't know why I even fucking try with you." His voice was loud and thick with anger.
"Why because I won't say exactly what you want me to?" I yelled back, I wasn't even angry at him I just felt defensive.
"How about because I told you I love you and you won't even talk about it," he yelled back and I caught my breath. He was right we hadn't talked about what happened at the airport. I had tried to ignore it and pretend it was all in my imagination. I once again didn't have anything to say. I was anticipating what he would say next but I just heard the line cut off, and I was left holding a silent phone to my ear. Shit. I sat down in the seemingly empty hallway because I wasn't up for going back to class, A few girls walked past me laughing and gave me a pitiful look but I just ignored them. The sound of the bell filled the hallway and I stood up before the crowds of kids started filling the halls. It took me about 10 minutes of searching for my backpack to realize that it was in the classroom and that it had my lunch money in it. This was the icing on top of the cake, I angrily walked o lunch finding Ruby and Audrey at our usual spot."Wheres your food?" Ruby looked at me approaching empty-handed.
"That's not important," I didn't really want to get into it. Plus this meant I had to go back to the classroom and probably explain why I never came back to class. I was thinking maybe I threw up and went to the nurse.
"Ok is that why you seem angry?" I just nodded no.
"Zion called today." I wanted her to stop pestering me, she just looked confused before Audrey saved me by chiming in.
"They come back soon!" They both looked happy but I rolled my eyes without thinking about it. I thought I was safe from any more questions but after Audrey's comment, she started right back into the interrogation.
"If Zion called why are you mad?" she looked at me like I was crazy.
"I don't know we just argued the whole time." I pulled out my phone to hint to her to stop which she luckily did, moving her attention to Audrey. They continued talking about the guys while I just stared at Zion's contact name and talked myself out of texting him.
I used the nurse excuse on my math teacher which seemed to work and then I headed to the final few classes I had, and while I would usually talk and participate I just slouched in my seat.
"Who can tell me the capital of Bangladesh?" My world history teacher a middle-aged man asked the class. I ignored him and looked out the window. I didn't see if anyone raised their hand but his voice suddenly startled me.
