(flashback)
richie had finally decided to do it. today was the day he was going to tell eddie how he felt.
richie was extremely nervous. he had never had a crush before, so he had no idea what to do and how to do anything. he asked stan for advice, as richie thought he was the most confident the losers, but he gave nothing that richie could follow.
richie sat on his bed, having a staring contest with the yellow telephone on the small desk next to him. he had a rough draft; nothing more.
he would call eddie and tell him to meet him at the quarry. they would sit and talk and admire the scenery and richie would eventually tell eddie that he was in love with him. the problems with his plan were, one, he didn't know if eddie liked him back, or if he even liked boys, and two, he had no idea how he was going to tell eddie. surely a joke wouldn't work, and you cant just slip that you like someone into a regular conversation.
the boy sighed, smashing a pillow into his face. none of the losers were dating anyone, so there was no one he could ask for help. he could ask his parents, of course, but he didn't know if they were against homosexuality or not, and he was afraid what would happen if they found out.
'to hell with this', he thought. richie picked himself up from the bed and walked over to the telephone, nervously dialing eddie's home number.
-
richie sat on the big slabs of rocks that settled closely to the gleaming green water the losers' club loved so much. he called eddie, and not so surprisingly, sonia answered. it took a bit of work for her to hand the phone to eddie, but richie managed to do it. they had agreed to meet at six o' clock.
of course, richie was early. he had left his house at five thirty and had gotten to the quarry at five forty five, bringing a piece of paper, a pen, and a pencil along with him.
richie, as ben was good at poetry and bill was good at drawing, was amazing at lettering and describing. they were hidden talents of his that only wentworth and maggie tozier knew about. richie had always thought them girly, so he never told anyone about it.
now was a time where his talents came in handy.
eddie had appeared at the quarry at six o' clock precisely, with his fannypack wrapped around his waist per usual. richie was sitting rigidly on a rock when eddie appeared, looking as if he had sat atop a porcupine.
"you okay, 'chee?" eddie asked softly, sitting beside richie and placing a hand on his back. he always knew how to comfort richie.
the raven-haired boy nodded, quickly handing eddie the paper, blushing.
i am in love with you. you hear me. i am in love with you. and i know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed, and that one day all of our labours will be returned to dust, and i know that the sun will swallow the only earth we will ever had, and i am in love with you. [from "im in love with u, sorry, by j'san]
will you, eddie kaspbrak, be my boyfriend?eddie gasped softly after reading the note, looking over at richie with tears brimming in his eyes.
and there, on the rock in the quarry, was where richie and eddie had shared their first kiss.where eddie had said yes.
