The sound of the water rushed around her, the swishing motion coming from her legs which were currently within the lake. The torch light hit the stone walls, with pillars and once windows also made of stone. At one point the water must have flooded this area as it was obviously used for something at some point. Now it was little more than eroded rock with what was once a beautiful floor.
The water rippled around her as her feet crunched under something. She did not wish to dwell on the possibilities, after all, she grew up with the stories that her great grandmother had told her before she had passed away soundly and happily. It was as though she were released from the poor world which she had come to know.
Her jeans had become undeniably soaked as she walked until she came upon a grimy, withered, eroding gate that was raised slightly. Shannon De Chagny knew she had made it but did not spare herself time to congratulate herself on her find. In fact, she was already cautiously moving under the slightly raised gate and into the lair itself.
As she did so, she remembered the words her withering great grandmother had told her at the age of four, three years before she died in a hospital, exceeding her son in her phenomenal life span.
"Shannon, he was a monster, but only because he thought of himself as such. He didn't have the looks of dear Raoul, or of many of the men. Part of his face was deformed. Yes, she was scared, but not nearly as scared of that, but of his temper. He had a fierce temper. A temper to be reckoned with. Perhaps the times he lived in – and people's poor judgement – made him cruel beyond repair. Though, I like to believe that she had, even just a little bit. She made him feel loved for a short amount of time. Who you ask is this woman I speak of? Well, it is Christine De Chagny. A close relative to us, my dear girl. Oh, yes, I knew the woman and the legend. Dealt with a lot that woman. Ridicule, humiliation and two love interests. No one knew the true story, but us. Now, take a candy."
Shannon giggled at the memory of her great grandmother who so often spoke of her dear cousin by marriage. She also enjoyed talking of the days she would go to the Opera Populaire herself and wish to be upon the stage instead of the next heiress to the De Chagny name. A name that was now passed over when read. No one remembered the name, or the people who were once so wealthy.
Though Shannon's great grandmother grew crazier through the years with her eccentric stories of the Phantom of the Opera and the ordeals with the Opera Populaire within Paris, Shannon never once doubted the credibility of the stories. Not even as she stood in the midst of the past at that very moment.
As Shannon stepped upon the shore, her jeans and her trainers now sodding wet, she began to look around at the many artefacts that could prove her great grandmother's story true. An old dusty organ, decaying with age and the keys yellowed. The stairway that was often spoken about was slightly caved in. The only way over was to jump, and if she failed to jump at a long enough distance, then she would fall through.
Then she heard it. A light melody echoed around the lair, the water rippling at its effect. She looked towards the organ, but the keys were not so much as moving. Her heart began to hammer in her chest, her pulse echoing in her ears, every so often the light melody – she now realised was singing – was echoing around the lair.
This cannot be possible, Shannon thought to herself, moving towards a broken mirror that clearly lead to a secret tunnel. This shouldn't be possible!
As the singing grew louder, Shannon raced through the secret passage which was uncovered, the black curtain pulled back, and began to run, her feet pounding on the stone ground. Once again, the sound of her pulsing blood echoed from one ear to the other until she could see red dots blurring her vision.
