Dear Diary,
Today marks the first day of the year2019, and it's also the day I managed to snag my former best friend's number after four long years. It's quickly turned into one of the best days of my life. No bloody kidding!I'm part of the 0.99% of the world's population that still keeps a diary, but I usually reserve it for special occasions.Let's get one thing straight: I swear. A lot. You'll just have to bear with me on this one. Lol, sorry, other me. Bye!
Your Lovely Owner, Amii.
I know I'm weird.
With a toothy grin stretching across my face, I fished out the tiny piece of paper that held everything I needed and squealed as I dialed the number. But the call ended with the girl not bothering to pick up. Frustration bubbled up inside me. Still, I reminded myself that today was supposed to be one of my favorite days, so I forced a smile on my face.
After a mental debate on whether to leave a flood of missed calls or a mature text message, I settled on the latter.
"Hey B. Please call me when you're free. - Your secret admirer ;-)" I squealed, hit send, and dashed off to Daddy's room.
He listens to all my stories, whether they're good or bad."Daddy! I got Sa'aadah's number!" I shrieked, practically bouncing in place. "You won't believe it!"
"Oh, I'm sure I will," he replied, his gruff voice reaching me from within the room. That was the green light I needed to burst in.
"Daddy! I left her a text message. Oh, I can't wait for her reply!" I skipped over to the mirror, admiring my new hairstyle.
Black and blue braids cascaded down my back, hitting right at my waist. As I flopped onto my bed, an ear-to-ear grin spreading across my face while I waited for Sa'adah's reply, I decided to tune into Riverdale on Netflix. Yes, I'm a fan of Veronica, and I'm 23 years old. She reminds me of myself in so many ways.
Just as I was lost in a scene where the girls swooned over Archie, my phone rang, jolting me out of my reverie. Annoyed at the interruption, I glanced at the screen, and, to my surprise, Sa'adah's contact was flashing delightfully.
"Oh yes!" I shouted, diving to grab the phone.
"Hello? Sa'adah! Oh my, oh my! I can't believe I finally got your number! Can you believe it? After four years, I've missed you so much!" I rambled, not even bothering to introduce myself. There was no need; she knows my voice all too well.
"Hey." The voice on the other end sounded deep and unfamiliar. I blinked, checking my phone to confirm I'd dialed the right number.
"Oh. You're not Sa'adah. Wait, are you her husband? Oh God, sorry you had to hear that! I just missed your wife so much. It's Amirah—her childhood friend. I bet she has said quite a lot about me. Nice to meet you, but I didn't quite catch your name." I sweetly inquired, but I think I heard him mutter something along the lines of "She rambles," which made my eyebrows raise in annoyance.
"Sorry, I think you've got the wrong number. I'm not married to any Sa'adah." My heart sank like a stone.
"Wait, please! This can't be real. Do you know how I got this number? You're kidding, right? This is definitely Sa'adah's number. Gosh!" I pleaded with the unyielding man.
"I told you that you got the wrong person, so if you could just calm down..."
"No. You're in no position to tell me to calm down," I snapped. "Did you even hear what you said? How can you expect me to stay calm when after all the trouble I went through to get my best friend's number, it's going downhill? That can't be possible!"
"Pampered, pompous kids these days... I can't deal with this." And just like that, he ended the call.
Pampered? Pompous? Kid? The nerve! I seethed.
How dare he call me a pampered pompous kid? A whirlwind of insults swirled in my mind as I struggled to compose the perfect response.
"You prick! Arrogant piece of shit," I typed furiously.
"You know nothing about me, so don't you dare call me stupid names. Sent!" I exclaimed, throwing the phone onto the pillow with a frustrated huff.
My day felt completely shattered.
A heavy weight settled in my chest, dulling any flicker of happiness. When I sulk, I really dive deep! Just then, my phone dinged, and I scrambled to see what the idiot had to say.
"I have work to do, kiddo." I read aloud.
Kiddo? Really? Even Dad doesn't call me that anymore. Who the hell does this guy think he is? I'm a grown up, for crying out loud! Clearly, he has no idea who he's dealing with.
"Jerk," I shot back, adding an eye-roll emoji for good measure before flipping the phone upside down, wanting to block out the annoyance.
I messed up Sa'aadah's number. There's no way to reach her now. The reality of my mistake hit me hard. "Oh my God!" I groaned, frustration boiling over as tears pricked at my eyes. This was nowhere near the day I had envisioned.
With a muffled sob, I shut my eyes tight and drifted off into an uneasy slumber.
"Madame?" A voice jolted me awake. A maid stood at my bedside, holding a bag in her hands. Delivery.
It was all a dream—no, a nightmare, it was all just a bad dream. Thank God.
Without wasting another moment, I grabbed my best friend's number from my bedside table and dialed. The phone rang until the fourth tone, and then it was answered.
"What now?" a husky voice grumbled, extinguishing any trace of enthusiasm I had mustered. "Who are you, please?"
I asked, weary. "I'm looking for Sa'aadah."
"Pampered kid? I thought our conversation ended already. Why bother me now?" So it wasn't a dream after all.
Hot tears pooled in my eyes as I felt my heart shatter once again.
"Drama queen," the man on the other end scoffed before abruptly cutting the call.
Wrapping my arms around the bag that had arrived, I let the tears fall freely. Minutes later, my gaze landed on a stunning pair of Louboutin heels, and my heart raced. I couldn't help but salivate at the sight; shoes have always been my weakness.
Wait... I never ordered these. "Daddy," I mumbled, realization dawning.
He must have come in while I was asleep, finding me with tear-stained cheeks. That man always knows how to brighten his 23-year-old daughter's day.
