If you think back to both world wars, and stop, just think about it for a few minutes, you realize how bad it really was, what people can do, how decayed mind people can have, how they killed millions of innocent people, children and women included...
There wasn't space for love because all men had to fight, they suffered and then died, leaving their girlfriends, wives and children alone. Their love was destroyed...
If you realize this and then look back to your current life, you'll see it isn't that bad.
On the other hand, nowadays it's a bit harder to find such a love, love where they left with hope to end the war, protect family and come back.
They fight for it.
