The bell sounded and it was time for Steve's favorite lesson, P.E.
Steve loved P.E., it was his time to get his mind off everything and just run. He was lucky with all the sport he did outside of school the coach just let him do whatever he wanted, most days it was running on the track.
A few laps in and Steve was starting to feel the burn but something caught his eye. Over by the basketball court, stood a guy with shoulder length, dark brown hair and too many layers of clothes for how hot it was. They locked eyes for a second. The glowing end of a cigarette dropped from his mouth as he stamped it out on the floor and walked away with out a second look.
Turning his head to look, Steve drifted out of his lane straight into an upper years way, tripping him over.
"Oh, sorry dude I wasn't looking where I was going." Steve exclaimed.
The guy looked over to a group of girls sitting on the grass that had started laughing to each other.
"You think you're funny? Eh?" He shouted as he jumped up off the floor
"What no, it was an accident!" Steve raised his hands palms up trying to diffuse the situation.
"Oh I'll show you an accident!" The older boy shouted as he swung a fist.
Steve has a history in martial arts so it wasn't easy to dodge the blow but this just made the older boy more angry. He threw a kick which again Steve avoid. Grabbing his leg, Steve pushed it up over balancing. The older boy hit the floor again with a shout.
"Hey! What do you think you're doing!" Mr Jenkins, the drama teacher, stomped over his face red and furious.
"That'll be detention for you Rogers!" He shouted, spittle flying from his lips.
"But-"
"No buts Rogers, I'm fed up with you sports kids thinking because you're on the team you can do anything you want. Detention after school!"
Steve sighed, he knew better to answer back even though he didn't do anything wrong. Answering back could make more trouble and detention wasn't the worse thing he could get. What could be worse than getting detention on the first day back? At least he could try to catch up on reading that book for English.
Jogging over to his bottle, Steve took a long swig from it before heading to the showers, he really wasn't in the mood for Running anymore.
After a quick cold shower Steve decided to slowly walk over to the detention room, he knew he'd. Be in for it if he was late. Rounding the corner he saw a bored looking supply teacher sitting at the desk, feet up on the table. He waved Steve in and turned back to his phone, his tap sound was still on loud, that's going to get annoying, Steve thought wearily.
Between the tapping sound of the teachers keypad and the clicking of the clock, there was not way Steve was going to be able to concentrate on his book. He glanced at the clock, it had only been fifteen minutes.
Suddenly, the door swung open so fast it hit the wall breaking a little piece out where the handle hit. The kid that was smoking by the basketball court stomped into the room and slung his bag down at a desk that was as far away from Steve as possible.
"Why are you late?" The teacher asked but by the sound of his voice he didn't actually care for the answer.
The boy didn't respond in voice but with a threatening glance.
Steve was mystified by this boys complete disregard for authority it more than that, his dark persona and his angry glare made him seem almost intimidating, Steve wasn't used to that feeling.
Every now and again Steve would glance over his shoulder at the boy sitting behind him to observe him inconspicuously. He wrote a band t shirt with a dark plaid shirt on top and a heavy looking leather jacket with black ripped jeans and battered black combat boots. In comparison to him, Steve was basically naked in nothing more than a blue t shirt and shorts.
"The hell do you keep looking at?" The boy shouted over the classroom.
Steve flinched, he had been caught.
"Barnes, sit back down!" The supply was up now and he looked worried.
Suddenly a hand slammed down on his desk making Steve jump.
"The hell you looking at." Barnes said tensely.
"Nothing, I was just thinking you must be hot with all those layers on." Steve said meeting the other boys eyes unwaveringly.
Barns let out a loud tsk and sat back down in his chair. Then after a few minutes the teacher got up.
"I gotta go piss so be good until I get back. And no leaving or you'll make up the time another day."
Just as the teachers footsteps began to fade down the corridor, Barnes got up and slung his bag over his shoulder before striding over to the door.
"Where are you going?" Steve asked
"Where does it look like I'm going?"
"You will have to make up the time and probably get more."
"Do you really think I give a shit?"
"Language..." Steve said under his breath.
"What did you say to me?" Barnes narrowed his eyes in anger.
"Watch you're language asshole!" Steve shouted back.
Barnes widened his eyes in shock for a moment and then gritted his teeth, sending a fist flying at Steve. He was fast but not faster than Steve who side stepped and used the other boys momentum to pull him into his own fist.
There was a loud crack as Barns fell backwards, blood streaming from his face. Steve felt his breath hitch, he hated hurting people even when it was necessary. But he wasn't allowed to dwell on it for long as Barns swept his feet out from under him so they both were sprawled on the floor.
Barnes jumped up and pulled on his sleeve to try and stop the blood flow coming from his nose. Suddenly he lerched to the side and threw another punch, which spun Steve's jaw
"You've got a mean punch." He muttered
"You're mean."
"Yeah..."
The teacher came back into the room and stood in shock at Barnes standing over Steve with blood on his hands. From where he was standing it was obvious what happened, the retrobate attacking the jock in a fit of aggression.
"James Barnes come with me now or do I need to call someone again." He bellowed sternly.
"No, I'm coming." James looked at his feet in shame as he shuffled out the classroom.
"Steve you are free to go."
