I woke up the next morning to my alarm going off. I hit the off button as fast as I could being very careful to not wake the twins. I looked at them sleeping soundly before I made my way to the bathroom.

I looked in the mirror at my bruised cheek bones and black eye. I peeled my bloody clothes off my small figure and saw a boot print against my left rib along with scattering bruises along my hip bone. I stepped into the small white shower. I pulled the shower curtain shut and turned on the water. The cold water hit me instantly causing me to jump back in shock. Eventually the cold water turned warm and I started to wash blood from the previous day off my body.

After finishing my shower I threw on a pair of faded blue jeans a long sleeve stained green sweater. I examined my bruises and sighed because I could not afford make-up to cover them. After deciding there was nothing I could do I tied my hair up and went down stairs to prepare lunches for the twins.

"What are you doing?" My mothers voice stopped me in my tracks.

"I'm going to make lunches for the twins," I said quietly.

"We don't have enough food to feed all of you today," she spit out, "send them without food, one day wont kill them."

I was shocked my mother had said this. She was always very careful to cover her abuse. She always sent the twins with something to eat so no one would get suspicious.

"But they need food," I protested.

"Are you back talking me?" My mother fumed and stepped towards me raising her hand.

I closed my eyes but did not answer. I took a few breaths and opened my eyes. I stood my ground and looked my mother in the eyes. I knew she would hit me so I started counting backwards waiting for the blow.

        5..4...3...2..

"Sissy? Caitlyn and I are awake," a little voice broke into my thoughts and I opened my eyes to see Carter standing in the doorway.

My eyes grew wide as my mother turned around and focused on Carter. A smirk grew on her face as she stepped towards the small boy.

"Hi," my mother said charmingly, "what is your name?"

It sickened me knowing my mother just asked her son what his name was. Carter's eyes filled with tears realizing his mom did not know who he was. My mother stood there waiting for Carter to answer but it was only a time before she would realize he was not going to speak to her.

"Get away from him," I said faintly.

"What?" My mother spun on her heel to look at me incredulously.

"I said get away from him," my voice got louder, "and Carter go back to our room. Our hiding spot remember."

My mother took a step towards me. I gulped involuntarily. Her sharped manicured hands struck my face causing scratch marks to appear. Blood ran out of the marks but I stood my ground hoping Carter had got my hint and took Caitlyn to the closet.

"Don't you ever tell me to get away from my own son," she said lowering her voice in anger.

"You don't even know his name," I said, "I am more his mother than you are."

Her jaw clenched and her eyes flickered between hurt and anger. She brought her hand up before slowly lowering it and storming outside with her keys. I knew she was going to 'drink away her problems' but right now I had my own.

I ran into my room to find the twins gone. I flung the closet door open and sighed in relief when I saw Caitlyn and Carter holding each other. I pulled the two against me and sat there recovering.

"I will always love you," I said to them with all seriousness.

They nodded there head and removed themselves from my embrace.

"Time to get ready?" Caitlyn's sweet voice whispered.

I nodded my head before plucking two small shirts and two little pair of jeans out of the dresser. After making sure both twins were dressed I went to the bathroom and cleaned the blood off of my face.

"You guys ready?" I asked them.

In return I got to hesitant smiles. I grabbed there hands and started walking towards there daycare. Once we got to Mrs. Daniels home I went to the door and knocked.

"Hel.." he voice trailed off with surprise as she took in my appearance.

"I'm here to drop off the twins, and I was kind of hoping that for today they could eat for free," I said looking towards the ground, "I promise I will repay you."

"Of course. Of course," the old lady said as she ushered the kids inside.

Mrs. Daniels the shut the door after stepping outside. She took in my appearance and shook her head.

"Haley you know if you ever need anything you can ask," she said.

"Yes Mrs. Danieals I know," I said fiddling with my hands.

"Just promise that if something ever happens that you will call me. I would be more than happy to take care of the twins for awhile," she said.

I stood there looking at the nice lady. Maybe a few days away from my mother would do good for the twins. I nodded my head and gave her a sad smile.

"Do you mind keeping them for a few days?" I asked.

She nodded her head and returned my sad smile before going back inside. Hopefully my beautiful babies would understand why I left them. I know mom will not be happy but they need a break. They should not have to grow up like I did. They deserve better than that and I will give that to them. With that I took off towards the high school. The only place I was invisible and no one ever hurt me.
