Emalie knew that her dog Rosie was the most obedient, so she decided to start with her cat. She looked at Teddy and studied his every feature. Then she closed her eyes and imagined herself turning into a cat just like him.
She felt herself grow smaller and furrier. She had been standing, but now she slowly started to crouch. She felt her entire body changing, and even felt like she was growing a tail, then she suddenly she opened her eyes and looked down.
Instead of hands and feet she saw paws! And they were hers! It worked! She thought. I'm a cat! She looked over at Teddy just to be sure that they hadn't switched bodies or something crazy. They hadn't.
"Teddy!" She shouted. It came out as a meow, and she understood it! I can speak cat! She thought. Teddy meowed back and it shocked her. He knew her name!
He had said "Emalie?"
"Yes it's me, Emalie!" She meowed happily. "What's going on?" Asked Teddy.
"I changed into a cat!" Answered Emalie. "Obviously." Replied Teddy. "Some bad guys kidnapped us!" Explained Emalie. "They wanted to give me superpowers, and they did! That's how I can change into a cat!" "Superpowers?" Asked Teddy.
"It means that now I can do things that I can't normally do." Emalie explained. Then she explained that she needed him to stay close to her, and not move in her arms or meow. When he heard how dangerous it was, he agreed they told each other that they loved each other, and then she turned to Rosie who had been pacing, and sniffing her since she had become a cat.
She looked at Teddy one more time, meowed goodbye, then studied Rosie's features. She closed her eyes and imagined herself turning into a Chihuahua. It worked again!
She then pretty much repeated the previous conversation, except she was barking and whimpering, she talked faster, and she traded out the word Teddy for Rosie.
Then, she imagined herself exactly as if she was looking in a mirror, and suddenly, she was back to normal. She knew that she had to move and think fast, but at least now her pets wouldn't make it too difficult.
She started walking toward the back of the house, motioning for her pets to follow, and crouched low to make sure that no one could see her. She knew that it was only a matter of time before she would have to try to run away from them.
She just needed to wait for the best time possible, and she figured that she might find that out by eavesdropping. Even though she knew that it was dangerous to do that, she guessed that it might be more dangerous not to.
She began to hear muffled voices as she walked closer and closer, crouching, creeping, carefully trying to be quiet. Finally, she felt like she was in the best area to try to spy.
Her back was beginning to get uncomfortable from bending, so she stood up slightly straighter. She saw the back of a tall man and she realized that she had made her second mistake of the day.
Before she could crouch back down, she heard a small meow. She knew who it had come from, and she knew exactly why. Her cat was trying to warn her to get down.
What had been to try to help seemed like it may have helped everyone catch her! She quickly motioned for her pets to be quiet and go away. Even if someone caught her, maybe her pets could escape.
And her dog was licensed. Once her pets were found, maybe they would begin to look for her in the surrounding areas.
And maybe, the police could find her and rescue her before she was under the men's control. But right now, she had to think about herself escaping. She was trapped!
Above her were the men who could jump down to catch her at any moment. In front and behind her were just two walls of dirt.
To her left there was another dirt wall, and to her right she could try to run, but they'd probably corner her there too. "What was that?"
Asked the man above her, who she'd just seen seconds ago. "I didn't hear anything." Said someone else.
These were different voices than the two people who had been in the room with her before.
"It sounded like a cat." Replied the guy she'd just seen. She heard a few slow, quiet steps, and crouched lower without making a single sound.
The footsteps came closer. She closed her eyes knowing that she was about to be discovered. She wished that she could just disappear. She imagined the man looking straight at her and seen nothing but dirt. Then she opened her eyes. She was staring straight at the man's face. He was staring right back at her. The key word being STARING.
He looked like he was searching for something. Or maybe someone. He looked to her left, then he looked to her right. He really can't see me! She thought.
The man stood up and walked away. Now's my chance! She thought. She slowly and quietly walked a few feet away. Once she saw her pets, she reached down and grabbed them both. Then she started running.
She heard someone shout something, but kept running. She could see that ahead of her the gully slanted upward like a mini hill.
About twenty yards away from that was the metal fence. She ran up the hill and kept going. Suddenly she heard a loud crash from behind her. She stopped running and turned around.
There, where she had just came from, two men were now running toward her! They had jumped into the gully so that they could capture her! Again. This has got to be the fastest I've ran in like, six years! She thought.
But she knew that the men were faster. Then someone grabbed her. Even though she had figured that it was only a matter of time, she was shocked when out of nowhere it happened.
She dropped her pets and started kicking the guy who grabbed her. Then she had a funny idea. She thought hard about it, hoping that there was some truth to all the rumors of humor that said that there were crazy kickboxing kangaroos. Seriously, she turned into a kangaroo. Unfortunately, it had the opposite effect. Now she was shorter, smaller, and weaker!
And to top it all off, the other bad guys were only a few yards away! Emalie knew that she had to take it up a notch. So, she tried out being a lion. She didn't want to bite them though, and they seemed to know it, so they weren't scared.
They did slow down a little bit though. Before, when she was a kangaroo, the guy hadn't hit her once. They must have been ordered not to damage their new superhero toy! She thought.
She knew that they couldn't capture her easily while she was a lion, but what if they had tranquilizer guns or something? She decided that she needed to be even bigger, with skills that she could actually use.
By now, four more men were only about fifteen yards away! She roared at her pets to go away, hoping that they understood.
They backed up a little, but she roared again, knowing that she was going to need a lot of space for what was coming next. She looked over at the six people nearby.
They had backed away a little, so she roared again. They moved back more, some looking in scared, others looking extremely nervous. She knew that if she wanted to, she could just run away from them.
It sounded easy enough, but there was no way she was gonna leave her beloved pets here to become animal supervillains after being mind-controlled and ordered to take over the world or something crazy!
So, she pictured herself turning into something worthy of an animal in a larger-than-life movie. She felt herself grow ginormous, then she opened her eyes and roared.
She had turned herself into kind of a Queen Kong! A gigantic gorilla that was larger than life, but much smaller than the well-known gorilla from that classic black-and-white movie.
The six men shouted and looked at each other, then they backed away. She roared again, louder this time, ignoring her pets loudness in the background.
One of the men pulled out a gun, but two others tackled him. Three started shouting at each other with the other three joining.
Emalie knew that her hands were too big for her to pick up her pets: She could easily hurt them. She decided that she had to make sure that these guys couldn't catch her when she turned back into her regular self.
She walked closer to them and slapped them, knocking them over. After a minute, they were all back on their feet. Then, just as before, one of the bad guys (the exact same one) raised his gun.
He shot and missed. Three of the others started teasing him about there not being a bigger target in the whole world. While he looked at them with shame on his face, Emalie grabbed his gun.
"Hey!" He shouted loudly, but it wouldn't have mattered what he said. Emalie looked at the gun wondering how to get rid of it. She thought about smashing it but she didn't want to get any metal splinters.
So, she decided to throw it. She threw it much further than any person could ever throw it. Well, unless that person was a superhero that is.
Three of the others pulled out their guns, but Emalie grabbed all of their weapons and threw them too.
The other two men (the ones who had unintentionally informed her about her powers) admitted that they didn't have guns.
Then the man who had fired first started talking to Emalie. "Nice girl. Good gorilla..." He said slowly.
"We can work together. You can rule the world." He paused.
"If you help us, we'll even let your family live in peace." Emalie roared. She would never let them use her or her pets to take over the world! She slapped them again, harder this time. "Well, reasoning won't work." Mumbled the guy who had tried to talk to her. They stood up again, barely, but it took them a minute. Emalie slapped them one last time, and then turned back into her normal self and ran to her pets.
She called them to her, picked them up, and kept running. She stopped after a minute though. Otherwise, she would have ran straight into the metal fence.
Which power should I use? She wondered as she set her pets down. She could turn into a giant, and knock it over like a stack of dominoes. But she didn't want to risk stepping on Rosie or Teddy.
Wouldn't it be nice if I could just run right through the fence? She thought. She imagined it and reached out to touch it. Her hand went right through the fence! Cool! She thought.
But then she realized that that power was useless to her right now. Even if she could run right through the fence, she couldn't take her pets with her! She would just have to figure something else out.
"Wow! I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner!" She said as an idea came to her. She couldn't believe that she had forgotten about her most important power!
She looked at the fence, used her power and then picked her pets up. She slowly walked through where the fence used to be, watching her pets to make sure that they didn't collide with it by mistake.
For all she knew, she had just made the fence disappear! They went through perfectly. She couldn't believe that she had just made a huge fence that went around an entire mansion become non-existent!
As easily as the ropes that had held her earlier! She set her pets down and decided to make the fence reappear. If nothing else, it would buy her a few seconds.
She wasn't sure if she could do it, but she tried and it worked! She looked down and saw a tote box like the kind people use for storage.
She shook some leaves out of it and decided to use it to help her carry Teddy and Rosie. She set them in it and started running. She didn't go far though, because she realized that she was going extremely slowly.
The tote was slowing her down! Once more, what had been to help her might actually help her get caught! She decided that walking wasn't working so she set her pets down and tried to think of other ways to travel. As soon as she thought of what to do next, her mouth dropped open and she gasped.
"Maybe I can fly!" She shouted. She closed her eyes and imagined herself midair. Suddenly, her feet were no longer on the ground. She opened her eyes.
"I'm flying!" She shouted. She looked down at her pets. Apparently, looking down made her loose her concentration, because she fell to the ground.
"Ouch." She said, even though she only fell a couple of feet. She heard shouting behind her, and she knew that she needed to use a faster, easier power that wouldn't need practice.
I need to use one of my animal powers. She thought. She started to think of fast animals and the first one that she thought of was a cheetah.
She imagined herself turning into one, making sure that her pets saw the transformation so that they wouldn't be scared of a wild animal. Then she picked up the tote in her mouth and started running, faster than she had ever ran before.
