There had been no wind before, but now it was so strong that it was extremely loud. Emalie could no longer hear the distant shouts, despite her enhanced hearing ability.
She focused on her surroundings. At first there had been no buildings, cars, or people.
Now, she was starting to see buildings in the distance. Is that a yellow M? She thought. She stopped running, and used her animal eyesight to study it. She felt extremely relieved when she saw that she had been right. "McDonald's!" She roared, still in cheetah form and accidentally dropping her pets. Luckily, she didn't drop them far.
The tote didn't even tip onto its side, but Rosie started barking, and Teddy started meowing. Emalie turned into herself again and calmed both her pets.
Then she turned back into a cheetah and started running again. She stopped once she spotted the first car. She hoped no one had seen her yet, and decided that it was too dangerous for her to keep running in cheetah form.
She knew that she'd have to run in human form from this point on. So, she set her pets down, turned into her normal self, and started running. After a few minutes, she knew that she was getting nowhere.
She was out of breath and weighted down by her pets. She figured that it was only a matter of time before the kidnappers caught up with her. If only I could run faster! She thought. She imagined a few superheroes on t.v who had super speed.
maybe I have it too! She thought. She closed her eyes and started running. She imagined herself running so fast that she became a blur. Then, she opened her eyes.
All her surroundings were passing by quickly, as if she were in a car on a highway. Once more, she both heard and felt the wind, but this time it was much stronger.
I'm running faster than a cheetah! She thought. She passed a gas station, Then gradually, started to slow down. She didn't think that it was a good idea for her to be running so fast in public.
She wasn't sure if she wanted anyone to know about her powers yet. She continued walking to McDonald's. She knew that it would be much safer than the gas station.
For one thing there would be more spots to hide. There would be more people too. It would be harder for the guys to take her, but she knew that they'd probably still try.
Thinking of that, she walked faster, determined to get there soon. She started thinking about what she say when she got there.
"Please give me your phone so I can call nine-one-one." It didn't sound quite right, but she couldn't think of a better way to say it.
She was already almost there, so she knew that the best that she could do was prepare herself to make the call. She prayed that she would be safe and know the right words to say. Then, she walked into the parking lot. There were only a couple of cars, and she hoped that they weren't closed inside. When she got to the door, she paused, staring at a sign stuck to the glass.
The sign said. "No pets" She sighed. And then balanced the tote on her side so that she could open the door. For all she knew, the fate of the whole world depended on whether or not she brought her pets in with her. There was no way she was going to leave them outside by themselves and allow those terrible people to steal them again!
Not to mention, if they saw them, then they would instantly know that she was inside! So, she continued carrying them as she walked inside. A few feet ahead of her and to the left was the counter.
Two women were having a conversation behind it. She couldn't tell what they were saying, but she didn't care too. She just wanted to talk to someone that she didn't have to interrupt.
Someone who could give her their full attention. But, she knew that that was unlikely. Still, she looked to her right hoping to find someone who didn't work there. The last thing she needed was to be told that she needed to leave her pets outside.
All sitting near each other, she saw six teenagers who looked about her age. She noticed a few of them were on their phones. Luckily, there they weren't talking to anyone on them though.
Two of them, (two who weren't on their phones) looked over at her. Then one of the phone users glanced her way. Now she was starting to get nervous. She knew that she shouldn't be, though.
She had just stood up to six tough men. She could stand up to three girls and three boys. Even if they were staring at her! One of the girls had a McDonald's uniform on though. She was eyeing the tote curiously.
No time to waste! Emalie thought. She quickly asked one of the girls if she could use her phone. "Why?" She asked. "I need to call someone." Emalie replied. "Obviously. Who?" The girl said impatiently.
"My parents." Emalie replied. She was too nervous and worn out to explain what had happened to her to so many people. The police, her parents, and now these people!
She did not need to explain herself three times! Not to mention, she wasn't sure that she would even be able to before the bad guys caught up to her!
"Can it wait?" The girl responded sounding even more impatient.
"Not really." Emalie replied truthfully. "Fine. Here." The girl handed her the phone.
"Thanks. I'm going to go over there." Emalie replied, pointing a few yards away. "Whatever." The girl said as she pulled out a second phone from her pocket. Emalie carried her pets there and set them down.
She called nine-one-on-one first, knowing that this was an emergency. Once she had an answer, she told the person her name and the fact that she had been kidnapped and had escaped the people who had done it.
"Where are you?" The woman on the phone asked. Only then, did Emalie realize that she had absolutely no idea.
She went to ask the girl who had lent her the phone and then repeated the information to the nine-one-on-one operator. "Remain calm, help is on the way." The woman responded just before saying goodbye and hanging up.
Then, Emalie called her parents and repeated everything, still leaving out of the part about her powers. She told them she loved them, then said goodbye and the phone call was over. She carried the pets back and handed back the phone.
"Thanks." She said. "Finally!" Said the girl. "What did you do, call the president!" Emalie giggled nervously, wondering how much had been heard. Then the girl in the McDonalds uniform came over and Peeked into the tote.
"Pets aren't allowed." She said. Oh no! Emalie thought. "They have to be!" She said loudly. "But they're not." Was the firm reply. "Leave them outside."
"I can't!"
"Why not? Emalie realized that her only option now was the truth. By now, all six teens staring at her, as if waiting for an answer. "Because I've been kidnapped, and if they see my pets, then they're gonna know I'm inside!" Emalie said.
This made everyone whisper to each other. Everyone except the girl in the uniform. "Lies don't solve injustices." She said disapprovingly.
"Its the truth!" Emalie responded, even though she knew that it sounded far fetched. "Why would anyone kidnap up girl and bothered to bring her pets along?" The girl asked. Emalie didn't know what to say.
"I bet they aren't even yours." The girl in the uniform continued.
"Why else would you be trying to hide them from someone? You stole them." The McDonalds worker accused. "That's not true!" Emalie defended herself.
"Yeah, you're probably right. Why would anybody steal them? They look like they haven't had a bath and like, forever."
I guess that's what happens when you're running for your life in a place covered in dirt! Emalie thought.
"As a worker I have the right to ban you from this McDonalds." The girl threatened.
"Don't get carried away Susie." One of the other girls warned. The girl in the uniform, who was apparently named Susie, rolled her eyes.
"I can't leave here and neither can my pets!" Emalie explained. Susie took them right right out of her arms. "Then I guess they wait for you at the nearest shelter."
That made Emalie gasp. "Maybe then they'll get a decent bath and some food." Susie said. "You obviously can't care about them that much if you treat them like this."
"They're like a brother and sister to me!" Emalie shouted. Susie scoffed and started walking to the door.
I can't lose my pets! I love them! And they might have powers like me! Emalie thought. And at that moment she was pretty sure that there was only one thing that she could do.
One thing that might prove that they really were like a brother and sister to her. She could make herself look exactly like them.
