"Th-the memories..." she whimpered.
Levi dried her eyes.
"You're safe now," he said.
Hanji sniffled and rubbed her eyes.
"Let's get my shitty glasses cleaned up," Levi said.
He undressed her and started a bath, but Hanji wouldn't let him remove her shirt though. Once it was warm, Levi carefully placed Hanji in the water. He grimaced seeing the bruising, cuts and damage that covered her body.
"Hanji, you need to take your shirt off," Levi said.
Hanji shook her head holding her shirt front closed. Levi set his hands on her shaking, cut and bleeding ones. He rubbed the tops of her hands till Hanji relaxed and dropped them. Levi removed her shirt, but froze when Hanji whimpered.
"H-hurts," Hanji said.
Levi looked at her back and cringed. There were several long, bloody marks stretching across her back.
"I almost escaped once, even with a broken leg," Hanji said.
"That's the Hanji I know," Levi thought.
"This was the punishment that was given to me," Hanji said.
Levi ground his teeth. Those monsters had whipped her. Levi was glad he'd killed them and that they could never hurt his Hanji again.
"Tell me what happened," Levi said as he gently began to rinse her back off.
Hanji very slowly started to tell him. The more he heard, the angrier Levi got. He got up and let out aa rage filled yell as he punched the wall.
"Levi!" Hanji exclaimed.
Levi took a few deep breaths and turned to face her.
"I'm sorry," he said.
He sat back down and began to wash her again. Hanji turned to look at him. She took his bleeding hand in hers. Levi sighed.
"I apologize for getting angry, but I..." Levi trailed off.
He looked at Hanji.
"Look, I am terrible at saying these kind of things," Levi said.
"When Erwin said that your group was found dead, and that there wasn't a trace of you... I couldn't even wrap my heard around the idea. Then he had the balls to say that you were most likely dead, so I punched him."
"You punched Erwin?" Hanji said.
"Yes. The bastard shouldn't have talked about you that way," Levi replied.
"The whole time I was missing, you always knew I was alive, didn't you?" Hanji said.
"Yes, I know my idiot wouldn't die or give up that easily," Levi replied.
Hanji blushed.
"Your idiot?" she said.
Levi froze. Shit, he just said that out loud. Hanji looked at him. Levi took a breath. He gently grabbed Hanji's face and kissed her. Hanji squeaked, her eyes wide. Levi pulled away, resting his forehead on hers. Hanji's cheeks were pink, but she had to admit, it was nice.
"Yes, you are my idiot and I wall always take care of you Zoë," Levi said.
Hanji smiled. Levi stroked her cheek.
"I know you will Levi," Hanji said, grabbing his hand tighter.
Levi finished cleaning Hanji up and got her out of the bath. Hanji was clearly exhausted.
"You can sleep after I bandage your wounds," Levi said.
Hanji nodded in response. Levi took great care as he tended to Hanji's injuries. Hanji couldn't help it and occasionally dozed off.
"Tch," Levi muttered.
"Oh, shut it," Hanji said sleepily with a laugh.
"All done," Levi said.
"Thanks," Hanji replied.
"Sleep now," Levi said, kissing her forehead.
Hanji laid on her side and pulled the blanket around herself.
"You'll stay with me, Levi?" she asked.
Levi could see the nervousness in her eyes.
"Yes, I promise to stay by you," Levi said.
Hanji smiled.
"Thank you," she said.
Right after, she fell asleep. Levi sighed. He brushed stray hair from Hanji's face.
"I make you a promise," Levi said quietly.
"I promise to be there for you every day, I promise to take care of you, and I promise to do everything I can to keep you safe Zoë."
Hanji, though Levi thought she was asleep, had heard everything. She reached over and grabbed his hand, pulling it to her chest. Levi smiled just a little, knowing Hanji was home safe with him and that she felt the same way he did.
