Toby is a steam tram engine, he was built in 1885 for his own tramway, and he was brought to Sodor in 1913 after his tramway closed, 4 months before James was brought to Sodor.
Toby's tramway was opened in 1886, he had several brothers there, he did not want to tell us their names, however.
Toby was left to manage the tramway on his own from 1911, until it's closure in 1913.
The reason for this was because all of his brothers were killed in a bombing by german aircraft.
After the bombing incident, the tramway was very well on it's last legs, due to Toby being the only one left to manage it.
Sir Topham Hatt visited the tramway with his wife and grandchildren the day before it's closure.
They liked the ride on Toby, even though Toby fumed through the ride because Bridget asked if he was electric, which he did not care for in the slightest.
After a week, Sir Topham Hatt managed to get stuff sorted out with Toby's previous owner, and Toby was brought to the North Western Railway on Sodor.
Toby has own branchline which goes to Ffarquhar quarry, which is where Mavis works.
Now, I know what question you shall ask....
"When do James, Thomas, Gordon, and Henry come into the picture?"
