Who is in control

I stood completely at his mercy, his eye transfixed on my shaking form. There was nothing I could do. I'd been discovered. Busted, and now, I didn't want to think what was going to happen next. He didn't like when I went out with her, he didn't have to say anything for me to know. I never understood his hatred towards her.

I couldn't meet his gaze, I was so embarrassed and completely terrified. Before I even had a chance to think up an explanation, he did something completely unexpected. He laughed. Baffled, I looked up. As usual his eyes were dark and empty. Any trace of life once there had disappeared a long time ago. His laughter died down and the air was filled with the thick silence. My eyes were trapped in his trance, I couldn't look away.

"Oh I'm sorry dear," His smug voice echoed through the darkness that surrounded us, "Did you actually believe I was worried about you?" I felt the room around me start to spin. Damn that gaze, it was like a drug, dulling my senses, making me slowly lose awareness of the world around me. I couldn't stop it, he had me hooked now.

"Oh," he clicked his tongue three times, his heels taped across the cold floor as he walked closer to me. "You thought that when I saw you two together, with you wrapped around her finger like that, you thought I actually cared about your well being?" His voice was fraud, the sarcastic tone wasn't mocking, there were traces of rage thrown in there, I could feel it.

I could feel my mind slipping further into his control, he could sense it too. a smile began to peak across his face as he felt my willpower fall into his hands. "I wasn't worried, dear Nathan. In fact, I was disappointed," He began pacing around me like a shark, me unable to say a word in defense, I was struck down powerless. "I thought I had taught you better than to let just anyone in. And now you go behind my back and let that girl control you like that. Very disgraceful Nathan,"

My breathing began to pick up. Everything he said was feeling 100% true now. The time I had spent away from him was suddenly feeling like a mistake. The way she had treated me, it was all just a trick. A ruse to use me. How could I not see it? "I...I'm sorry," I muttered out.

He stopped moving. I could feel his eyes burning into the back of my skull, I didn't dare look back. "I thought you wanted me to teach you control? When you came to me, weak and begging for help, you said you never wanted to be used again. I thought you wanted to have power the way I do," the memories of that day flooded back with each word he spoke. I was weak, I needed to know that I wouldn't be pushed around and stepped on by anyone ever again. I needed to be stronger. So I let him in. I let him show me how to be stronger, and now I was abusing that bargain we made so many years ago.

"I do want that," I muttered, the words had never felt so true before.

"Then next time that girl calls upon you and commands you to play whatever game she has planned, don't let her. Use what I've taught you. Be better, or else my kindness just might run dry," I could hear his footsteps begin to fade. I could feel myself return to normal. The darkness once surrounding use was fading, and my room came into view.

He was gone now, and I was alone, though I knew he was still watching, he always was. I was his apprentice after all. His little protegee. He could easily cut me off if he wanted, so I couldn't slip up again.

I jumped slightly as a ringing came from my pocket. I pulled out my phone, looking at the caller ID. It was her. As if it were some test, sent to see if I would fall short. The temptation to ignore his demands was strong. I very much enjoyed the time we spent together, but the more I thought about it, the more apparent it became that it was nothing more than an in-the-moment high. My face fell flat as I ignored the call and let my phone rest in silence on the table.
