It was a wonderful day. Sun was shining bright, boys were calm and Dean and Oliver were just driving back home. In Ollie's car, of course. God forbid they damage Baby on the 20-minute drive to wor!.
„I can't believe I actualy managed to save the thing! After three times they declined our offer! And now I sold it! I did it!" Dean said once again, excited as a little kid. Oliver rolled his eyes.
„Yeah, yeah, you're a freaking genious, starting with that story about talking cars..."
„Oh shut up. It was just a slip up. In the beggining, so it doesn't count! You know what counts? The end! And ind hte end, I DID it! I made a deal!" He was practicaly bouncing in his seat. Oliver laughed, enjoying the moment. Dean was rarely this happy. And he really did made a miracle back there. (Especially after that awful beggining...)
Smiths were owners of one of the biggest companies in the town, and twin brothers, managers of the whole thing, were really good at what they were doing.
Which was not necesarily a good thing, seeing that what they were doing was ruining peoples' lives.
They were hiring people because of who their parents were, and were regularly firing those who did their job, but were coming from worse parts of town. People whose survival often depended on that very job. Lots of them transferred to Johnson company, leaving Smiths to slowly drown in lack of not only good workers, but people in general. That made the whole deal even sweeter, and the fact that it was Dean who closed it was just the cherry on top.
(Of course, Dean was the reason they didn't make a deal first three times, but you know...past is in the past! Everybody makes mistakes. And besides, Oliver just didn't want to ruin the moment by bringing that up.)
Instead of that, the moment was ruined by a call they recieved few minutes later.
„Johnson, you there?" Oliver looked at Dean, who mouthed „What?" Oliver quickly looked at number to see who was calling, waving other hand to shush his brother. Dean then tried to see who was calling, but Oliver pushed him away before he had the chance to. He just managed to se it was someone from fast dialing, which was rarely a good sign. While Oliver was dealing with him, the person already continued speaking.
„Detective West?" Dean interrupted, staring at Dean. „Yeah, look, I'm..." Dean huffed next to him, interrupting him. He recognized both that look and the tone of voice. Someone was in trouble. He motioned Olie to put the phone on speaker. Who did it. Once again interrupting detective in the middle of his speach, and missing most of what he was saying.
„...a cent." „M'sorry, what?" West sighted, clearly misiterpretating Oliver's cunfusion for anger. „I said, it was an accident! And I repeat, everything went fine, no one was hurt..." Both brothers exchanged annoyed looks. That kind of story? It never meant anything good was about to be said.
'Everybody's fine, those dogs Dylan freed were infected by rabies, but you know, they haven't bit anyone... yet..' Or 'You know, Jamie was driving 150 over the allowed speed after he tried a joint for the first time, but it's fiiine, nobody was injured!' Or even better 'I don't want you to worry, but we had a tiiiiny...explosion....here on maths, Peter also mixed some permanent markers into explosive chemicals that blew around the classroom and we thought everybody caught deadly disease so police and ambulance and news are all here, but those were just stains from markers and...'
So yeah, not a good start.
„What happened?" he asked, preparing for the worst. Dean leaned forward in his seat.
„Someone reported a loud noise in abandoned factory so we went to check. We just expected it to be a prank call, you know that part's clossed for public since that incident last year. One patrol car went to see what was happening, they called back fiften minutes later. It looked like there was some fire burning in there so they called both firefighters and us. That's the protocol."
