First time they noticed, months ago, it was by an accident.
„Dinner, people! Let's go, move it!" Everybody moved in the same time, their steps sounding like a thunder on the upper floor. Oliver waited 'till everybody came down, smiling at them. Their chatting was refreshing after the whole day of boring meetings.
„So, how's everybody been doing? How was your day?" He asked, eating his spaghetti. Grant slurped them in loudly, eating so fast someone would think he hasn't ate for days.
Dylan, on the other hand, barely ate his meal. „Did you really just asked me that?" He mumbles, shifting uncomforatably. Grant mirrored his movement, still gorging up his spaghetti. Stefan rolled his eyes.
„Dy, back off. He was just being polite."
„Besides" Zac looked up „a whole day lasts 24 hours. It took you what, an hour to end up on the crime scene? And another 'till Dean brought you back? And the sp..."
„Okay, we get it!" Peter growled. About that moment Oliver noticed he hasn't even touched his meal.
„Pete, why aren't you eating?" „I am." „No, you're not." „I AM."
„Your fork's clean." Damon looked at him. „You're not."
„I'm just not hungry." He mumbled. „Can I go?"
Oliver was about to nod 'yes' when Dean's leg hit his own. He turned to look at him, and Dean pointed at Peter's chair, mouthing 'look'. Oliver waited and kept looking, slightly confused. What was Dean showing him? He looked fine. He acted a bit grumpy, yeah, but everybody had a bad day sometimes. He was crossing his forearms on the table, looking around nonchalantly, he even sat straight for once...And then there it was.
There were certain ways to know if someone's lately been in trouble. Sometimes the person was grumpy or unusualy quiet, sleepy or overly cuddly. But behaviour like that usualy went away in no more than a day. The best sign, actualy, was squirming.
Be it in school or at meals, all of them learned to recognize and even categorize ways others were sitting. At first volume, it was just a wiggle before sitting down, with occasional moving from one side to other. A swat or two, probably a warning. Check if person's in good mood, otherwise safe to continue.
At second volume, it was this little movement every now and then, usualy followed by a quiet, almost unhearable sigh. Smaller punishments, or a few harder swats. Procede with caution.
And the third volume. Constant wiggling, shifting, moving around, or sitting in a weird way to avoid putting presure to ..errmm...tender area, along with tapping leg and showing other signs of frustration. Full-blown whipping. Sign of a troublemaker.
Now, this was what caught Dean's attention. Tonight's victims were Dylan and Grant, both caught in the middle of the shooting and brought to Oliver by furious detective West and sheriff Stilinski. As expected, both of them had full-blown volume three simptoms. Dylan sat in a way that looked like it should belong to a yoga instructions book, and Grant has been squirming so much it looked like he was jumping on his seat. However, they were not the only ones.
Peter was squirming, too. Little movements, almost invisible, but existent. And his face. Jaw set tight, tears in the corners of the eyes. Unwilingness to eat. Oliver mentally slaped himself. He should've noticed it sooner.
It took only a few moments for Peter to notice Oliver was still staring at him. „What you're looking at? Can I go or not?"
He stood up and went without waiting for an answer. Damon stood too. „Pete!" he called after him. When the youngest brother just ignored him, he tried going after him. Oliver stopped him.
