Chapter 8: Doubtful Friendships
“Having a relationship with people of questionable character is like playing with a razor blade on your skin, and pretending to observe that it is harmful to your body."
-Michael Bassey Johnson
He was a good guy. She watched as Levi placed their dished in the hot water and soap to washed them clean. Rae honestly didn't know how to process it all. He had taken her to get her table, they came back to her apartment where he cooked, he slightly opened up to her about his life growing up, and now he was cleaning up her kitchen. Of course she should be use to the treatment, but it was always someone who worked for her. She couldn't remember the last time someone that was this generous to her without being, the maid, the butler or her driver. She had to offer to take him somewhere tomorrow. It was only right.
"Thanks for everything today," Rae said, walking up behind him in the kitchen.
Levi empty the kitchen water and draped the dish rag on the middle divider of the sink. "What did I say about thanking me?" He reminded her.
Rae jumped up onto the counter and smiled. "I know, but I really appreciate it," she replied. "Plus I want to take you to breakfast tomorrow. My treat."
"I can't let you do that," he said. "You still have things you need around your house that you don't have."
She frowned. "I have everything," she protested. "Money isn't a problem Levi."
Shrugging he leaned against the counter and crossed his arms over his chest. "It should be," he countered. "You need a TV and a cell phone. Can't be hanging out in the hood without a cell phone."
"Speaking of cell phones, call I use yours," she asked him.
Levi dug in his back pocket and took out his Samsung Galaxy 4s and handed it to her. He walked out the kitchen giving her some time alone to make her phone call. Thanking him, Rae dialed the number glanced at him as he strutted out. His backside was something to look at. Dialing the number, she waited for the other person to pick up the call. Several seconds later, Rae ended the call, not leaning a voice mail. It was no use. This was get last time reaching out.
Rae hopped down from the counter and walked over to Levi to give him his phone, when the doorbell rung. Earlier she had saw Lil B running around the apartment building and thought that it was him. The boy was crazy and always getting into something that he had no business getting into.
To her surprise, it wasn't Lil B. She was astonished to see the man before her at her door.
"Adam!" She shrieked. "What are you doing-"
"Thank God I found you," he praised, hugging her tightly. "I came as soon as I heard what happened."
Rae had been living in South Central for a couple of weeks now and he just found out about what happened to her. It was hard for her to believe that. The entire world knew what had transpired the day her family went broke. Rae was more than sure that the elite group knew within the first twenty-four hours. It was still on the news, printing in tabloids and newspapers. Her family was the laughing stalk to go from riches to rags. Adam had to know.
"What are you doing here and how did you get here?" She asked.
"I drove in my new 2014 ruby red corvette," he said. "How else would I get here. Are you going to let me in?"
Rae hesitated then slowly opened the door wider and stepped to the side to let him in. She watch his face contort in disgust. He glanced around the small studio apartment. The walls were dirty and so was the carpet floor. Adam looked at the couch and saw that that was the only sitting furniture in the room. Since it was as studio, there was no room for another bed. A pull out couch just had to do in such a small place.
