CHAPTER 2 Miscellaneous
Kelsey's brother drops us off in front of the school building and we remember to thank him for the ride before he drives off to work.
Ah, good old school. It smells of kids' sweat and other miscellaneous odors. It's where the general student body feels they are tortured every day either because they're stupid and are failing or because they're being teased every time they walk through the hallway. Then again there is always that other kind of person who just doesn't like school for no reason in particular.
Me? I dunno. Learning is okay, and I can say that because I've got good grades. But school - just like everything else in life - has its ups and its downs too.
As Kyle, Evilyn, Kelsey and I walk through the halls, people turn their heads, as they usually do when I walk through the hallway with a new fashion sense that defies Mandy's list of In&Out. The four of us are accustom to their turning heads by now though; we pay the onlookers no attention, like they're invisible. If we don't pretend they're invisible I think I speak for all of us when I say: we feel self-conscious. Although I do admit:
It is pretty exciting, and I do get one heck of a kick out of it.
"Yo yo yo! RG!" shouts Griffin Heath as he walks towards us with a grin on his dark lips. He slaps me a high-five as we walk past each other and does some handshake with Kyle.
"I like yo' neon!" he shouts over his shoulder as we begin to walk in opposite directions.
"I like yo' dreads!" I shoot back, and I'm able to see him grin before we lose each other in the crowd of students.
Kyle laughs as we continue on our way to our lockers. "You always say the same thing."
"Not always." I insist. Although Kyle is right. But hey, what am I supposed to tell Griffin? That I like how white his smile appears against his dark skin? I actually really do like his smile, but I can't exactly tell him that. That'd just be A-W-K-WARD.
Coincidentally, all of our lockers are around the same area, which makes us luckier than most people, I think. I open my locker to take my first period books out when I hear:
"Well, well, well, if it isn't Miscellaneous."
Kyle laughs as Evilyn, Kelsey and I turn to face the familiar voice. "Well, he-llo to you too Andrew." I say.
Andrew is one of Kyle's long-time buddies from the basketball team. And "Miscellaneous" is what he calls us - meaning us three girls.
In a way he has a point; the group of us are pretty odd/random: a girlie-girl, a chick who wears black all the time, and a rebel (currently sporting a lot of neon).
When I first met Evilyn and Kelsey I certainly didn't think we would be good friends either, we were in the public library, all trying to check out the same book: Romeo and Juliet. Evilyn and I needed it for English class, and Kelsey just wanted it - badly. When I first laid eyes on the both of them I thought Evilyn was all dark, and Kelsey was a whole grade younger. But lo and behold, now they're the two girls in my life I can't live without.
"You're very colorful today, Ky." Andrew comments. "'Neon' isn't a bad look for you."
"I know." Kyle agrees, closing his locker and coming to Andrew's side. "Who says neon is Out?"
Rhetorical question. I have a response anyway: "Uh, Mandy, duh. Seriously bro where have you been?"
We all laugh and the bell rings. "See you guys at lunch." Kelsey says, and then walks off to her first period class. Kyle says good-bye too, and then it's just Andrew, Evilyn and me, walking off to class together.
