CHAPTER 52 How To Lose Things

Madelin tried to tell me as soon as it happened. It was the day Evan decided to ditch school. She said that, on that day, she and Evilyn were talking as Evilyn was taking her books out of her locker. When Evilyn took one of her books, a paper slipped out and fell onto the floor. Madelin said that Evilyn picked up the paper, read it, and then her face turned a sickly pale.

She wouldn’t tell me what happened next, cuz Evilyn made her promise not to. All she said was that Evilyn reacted very badly to whatever was in that letter. She could have started to hyperventilate. She could have had an emotional breakdown. I really don’t know. But I didn’t need to know. I trust Madelin’s judgment.

Madelin said she didn’t know what the letter said. She told me that Evilyn made it so that nobody would ever be able to see it again. That’s my Evi. She probably set it on fire and tossed the ashes into a well.

So I looked into it, and told Madelin I’d call her if I found anything out. I spent a day with the Cross’. I didn’t ask them if they noticed anything unusual around Evilyn lately, because I knew that would have worried them. Instead I spent time alone with each one of them individually, so they could ask me if I thought anything was wrong, because then I’d know they thought something was up and start an inquiry based off that.

I know, I know, I’m a genius. But save your praise so that I can finish telling my story.

Anyways, that trip gained no results. Zip. None. So then I figured the next-likely persons to know if something was wrong were the members of Raven’s 5. I started off with Jamie. I asked her if she’d talked to Evilyn recently, and she – very exasperatedly – said that she hadn’t talked to her much since the night that Evi and the Raven’s 5 boys took on a guy that had been cruel to Jamie. That was the night I got suspended.

I thought of talking to Haley, but then I figured that since she always sees Evilyn in this…light of admiration and positivity, even if she did see something abnormal, she probably wouldn’t register it as so.

(Sorry Haley.)

Then I took a short trip down the street to St. Peter’s Catholic school. Guess who goes there? Yeah, that’s right: the guys of Raven’s 5. Right down the street from Evilyn’s old school.

Guess it’s pretty obvious how Raven’s 5 formed.

And what’s funny is that I don’t think a single one of them is Catholic.

The guys were already in class when I got to St. Peter’s. I texted Quinn and told him to meet me when it was time for their break, or something. And even though I was willing to wait however long I would’ve had to wait for, Quinn was out by the entrance gate in less than five minutes. He said hi and told me that Will and Sean would be coming out too, since they were looking for a reason to ditch class anyways.

Quinn was dressed in some schmancy formal pants and a blazer, and to add on to that, he wore a super snazzy sweater vest over a white button up and a red and gold tie. I knew it was uniform, but part of me wanted to laugh at him. It isn’t the time of year for that many layers.

I noticed that every Raven’s 5 member that came out of that building had less and less of a respect for uniform. It was funny, really. Quinn (a.k.a. the “good” student) was dressed all-out in uniform. Will (a.k.a. the “meh” student) was wearing the pants, the sweater vest, and the shirt, but not the blazer and the tie. And Sean (a.k.a. the “bite me” student) was wearing black jeans, the button-up, and the lazily tied tie.

I don’t know why it was so funny.

But, back to business…

“I’m going to get right to the point with you guys,” I told them. I didn’t have to be all spy-girl with them like I had to be with the Cross family. I wouldn’t feel guilty about making them worry…which sounds like a mean thing to say now that I’ve said it, but you get what I mean, right? “Has anything weird been happening with Evi recently?” I asked, straight to the point as I promised.
