Night of the accident
I twirled around my mirror, admiring my beautiful emerald green Senior Ball dress. The night was here, the one Steven had been planning for almost six months now. I was so excited it took everything in me not to sprint upstairs when the doorbell rang. Instead though I contained my enthusiasm and gracefully walked up them. I could hear Steven and my dad talking about me upstairs."I want her home by 11:30 no later."
"Scouts honor Wayne, she will be home by 11:30 and no later" my dad and Steven shook hands and finally spotted me at the top of the stairs. Steven's face broke into an enormous grin. "I have got the hottest girlfriend on the planet." I shook my head and laughed.
"No I'm sure someone out there is prettier than I am."
"But they are not my girlfriend so I don't care." he strutted over to me and gently took my hand and kissed it. Then pulled me into a tight embrace. "I love you." he whispered in my ear. I sighed happily and whispered back.
"I love you too."
"Alright enough of this get out of here." My Dad interrupted. Steven and I chuckled and headed out the door. His old beat up malibu sat in the driveway, being the kind gentleman he is, he opened my door and escorted me into the passenger seat. Then got in himself, he placed his hands on the steering wheel and sighed. Then smiled and looked at me mischievously. I laughed and nodded my head. He did a little happy dance then leaned over the center console and kissed. His lips were warm and gentle. We didn't kiss often, but when we did, it always felt so incredibly special. I began to pull away, he gently caressed the back of my head and urged me to continue. I smiled and laughed then leaned in again.
Finally, after probably a little too long, we pulled away. We had never made out before, making out involved tongue and all this other nasty stuff, but we always kissed longer than just a peck. Steven ran his fingers through his hair and started the car. Or at least tried to, the engine wouldn't start. Steven glared at the ignition and tried again. Still nothing, then again and again. He smacked the steering wheel. "I hate this car!" he shouted, frustrated and sounding almost desperate.
"Steven its ok my dad can get his jumper cables and start it up for you." he shook his head.
"This car is totaled and a piece of junk it won't start up with the jumper cables. I'll just call Jackson and see if he can pick us up." He dialed the number and held the phone to his ear.
No answer.
"Maybe Jason?" I asked, again no answer. "Maybe we could have my parents take us?" he stared at me bewildered.
"Does that not embarrassed you at all?" I shook my head, in all honesty that didn't bother me in the slightest bit. "Alright I guess that's fine." I smiled and ran back inside.
"Hey what are you still doing here?" my dad was sitting on the couch watching baseball.
"Stevens car broke down can you take us?" My dad grinned evilly and nodded his head.
"Mel, I'm taking Kenzie and Steven to Prom wanna come?" my moms head appeared from her bedroom door. Grinning, she stated.
"Yes I want to come" my mom and dad quickly ran and opened the garage to reveal our dodge ram truck and a sheepish Steven.
"Stupid cars and not working properly." my dad whined sarcastically.
"Hey its worked great for my mom for the past twenty years, its entitled to a break down."
We climbed into the truck and headed off to the dance. We drove in silence for a few minutes before my mom finally caved. "So Steven how is work at Kohl's going?"
"Its pretty great I actually love my Job for once." My dad stopped at the stop light on 1000 North.
"That's always nice, better than Arby's I assume."
"Definitely the work environment is much friendlier." the light turned green and my dad tapped the accelerator. Suddenly the entire truck shook violently rolling and crashing. Cartwheeling through the air. I felt my wrist go through the window. My legs felt like they were in pieces. I heard my mother scream and my dad cry out for help. I felt Steven reach for my hand. Then it went silent.
I woke up on the pavement, I could feel blood dripping down my face. I saw three forms lying still.
"Mom! Dad! Steven!" I tried to call out but my voice was barely above a whisper. I could see our crushed truck under the semi that had t-boned us. I tried to stand but my legs wouldn't respond. I began to army crawl towards there still forms. Then I heard footsteps and glass breaking under someone's shoes. A pair of black nordstroms appeared in the corner of my vision. A deep baritone voice spoke.
"They're dead." I shook my head.
"Call the police please, they need doctors!"
"They're dead."
"No they can't be!"
"They're dead." the voice repeated again. "But you can save them." I froze mid army crawl. I rolled onto my back and stared up at the face belonging to the voice. It was a man taller than six foot wearing a fitted suit. He had chiseled features and black hair. He carried an ebony polished cane.
"Who are you?" he grinned devilishly. "What do you mean you can save them?"
"A soul for a soul."
"A soul for a soul?" He nodded his head.
"Trade your life for there's."
"Trade my life for there's? What are you talking about? Who are you?" He offered me his hand and bowed deeply.
"A proper introduction is in order, the name is Lucifer, and you can save them, your life, for there's." I stared slack jawed, The Devil himself stood before me. After several seconds of confusion, I regained my senses and stated.
"But there's three of them and one of me." He grinned.
"The worth of souls goes up when the owner is pure. Your worth six souls to me. You can save them your life for theirs." I stared at him stunned, then shook my head. They are not dead, I army crawled the rest of the way to my mom. She wasn't breathing, her face was bruised and battered almost unrecognizable. I crawled to my dad, his head was twisted in an awful manor and I couldn't bare to look any closer. I scooted to Steven and sobbed. His eye was swollen and black, something sharp jutted from his back and bones broke skin where his ribs rested. I rolled to my back and sobbed. They're gone, they're all gone. " you can save them." He repeated. I opened my eyes, he stood over me, a look of genuine sorrow on his face.
"I can save them? For what price?"
"Sell your soul to me and they will live."
"I'm giving up everything..." He nodded his head solemnly. "I want a few things in return if I'm giving you everything." He narrowed his eyes and glared in frustration.
"What would you like in return?" He growled. I racked my brain for ideas.
"They all have to live full lives." His scowl turned into a pleased smile.
"You are either brilliant or idiotic, fine what do you consider full lives?" I thought quickly.
"They all have to die of old age." he nodded his head.
"Agreed, do we have a deal?" I nodded my head, realizing too late what I had just dine. He gave me his hand and we shook on it. " you have a day to say goodbye."
